I remember trying to increase the magnetism with a 6 V lantern battery. When the wires started smoking, the teacher took everything away and we never did anything electrical again.

Ah yes, and it was probably just small part of a larger unit on the introduction to magnets themselves... at least that's how I remember it.

I remember doing this in class. I tried to show off by using a 12V DC charger instead of a battery and held the coil with my bare hands (no gloves). It heated up way faster than expected… and I ended up burning my hands.
