I listened to this particular podcast featuring Dr. Julia Jones during my morning coffee routine. I have been making an effort to listen to some podcasts as soon as I wake up rather than diving directly into my emails or messages via Slack, and this particular podcast had a nice effect.
The way Dr. Jones talked about her experience creating an all-girl rock band called "Pretty Crap" really made me smile. I used to play guitar just for fun, but once I was caught up with work, I stopped doing it. The way she explained how playing music and laughing with your friends makes you healthier and creates new connections in the brain is really inspiring me to pick up the guitar again on the weekends.

But what resonated most were her candid comments on the emphasis on healthspan and happiness rather than just longevity, and also her self-compassion in regard to creating habits. My father had several health problems throughout his life, which made me realize that I'd prefer to feel well while alive. Understanding that the brain requires months of consistent daily effort to form a proper neuronal connection alleviated much of my guilt when failing to adhere to a newly created habit. Her easy-to-implement daily check-in method with a friend sounds highly feasible to a busy life of a techie.
It was also nice that she canceled her gym membership but still succeeded with improving her health through minor modifications to her everyday activities such as walking up the escalator. It is more relatable than most of the overly extreme biohacking tips circulating the web today.
A minor recommendation for future podcast episodes could be concluding them with 2-3 practical takeaways so that listeners such as myself can implement some of the discussed ideas.
All in all, it was a great experience, and I'm looking forward to your next episode.
