Seeking someone to do some PCB soldering for me!

Hi all,

Hopefully this is the right place to ask this. 

I've got a small project on the go thats going to require a bit of soldering, initially it was going to be just removing some existing antennas from  two wifi adaptors and soldering on a 10cm length of coax with SMA connectors on the end (to allow me to mount wifi adaptors within an enclosure with external antennas.

Basically removing the white wires seen above and replacing with coax.

However I'm now thinking id like to remove the USB A from these adaptors, solder the usb cable straight onto the board to keep thinks much smaller, and then solder the other end of the USB cables onto a small powered USB hub  (again with the USB A connectors removed to keep things small).

Plan was to get all the kit and do the soldering myself but to be honest theres a good chance i'll have a disaster and im not too sure how much soldering im likely to do in the future, so maybe best that I get someone who knows what they are doing on the case!

If there's anyone on here that can do this kind of stuff, I'd love to have a chat, willing to pay for the service.

    The hackerspaces wiki can be a bit more out of date.

    Hola, 
    This is fun! I think sending it to someone might be a bit of a long way around,  If you have a more advanced Phone Repair Shop, or a Console fixing shop close to you (Maybe they do Mod Chips) They could  quote you for it. 

    Alternatively find your local Repair club.

    Im on the somerset/dorset border, but would assume id need to post this to get it done. Yes ive all the bits, coax and usb cables etc so no sourcing of parts required.

    I've never tried the following approach, but maybe those small local mobile phone/laptop repair stores might do it for a small fee, if you can explain what you want (they won't be electronics experts but can possibly solder/desolder well perhaps). 

    Another option could be to fit a USB socket on the enclosure, and plug in a small WiFi adapter on there, instead of SMA.

    I agree with MK someone may be interested to do this just as a challenge.
    However.....

    It may be useful if you say whereabouts in the UK you are and if you have both the coax cables and a suitable USB cable so:-

    A0. The job might be 'local' and

    b). It comes with all the required 'bits' so it is JUST a soldering job?

    I sort of get where you're coming from, but this isnt 1980s anything its brand new reasonable quality kit. 

    The crux of it is:

    1. Removing those two white wires that currently connect the existing dipole antennas and soldering on a a length on coax on instead (which i have, they have panel mount RP SMA connectors on the end so i can make my own enclosure with external antennas

    2. If realistically feasible, removing the USB A connector and soldering a USB cable directly on to reduce overall footprint of the adaptor, and as these are going onto a powered USB hub  I may aswell consider doing the same at the USB hub end aswell as its all getting mounted in the same enclosure.

    Doesnt seem on the surface to be a open ended job that takes an unknown about of time? Of course happy to be corrected if ive got that wrong. Also if this isnt the place to be asking a question like this then any bit of direction to where could be a better place would be appreciated.

    Your problem is that from  commercial point of view this just isn't likely to work.

    I get lots of people asking me to fix this and that (since Google listed my business without asking me first) and the problem is that to fix a 1980s anything could take anything from 10 minutes to three days (or never) and I don't know which until its finished.

    And at a reasonable hourly rate it could be a lot of money.

    This job looks similar.

    So your best hope is to get some one interested and hope that they will do it for amusement.

    To do that you'll need to explain what it's all for  -  and see if you get any takers.

    I'm in SW Scotland - if you were nearby I'd invite you to drop in and chat about it - but since only 0.2% or less of the UK population lives within 50 miles of me it's unlikely.

    But if you explain a bit more on E14 you may get some useful advice.

    Thanks for the reply, yes USB 3 but they dont use superspeed, in reality USB2 would be fine so perhaps use soldering the 4 USB 2 pins rather than all 9...

    The reason id like to lose the connector is the aim is to get them in a small housing. with multiple adaptors and a small usb hub, the usb connectos end up taking a fair bit of space up

    That looks like a USB 3.0 A connector. I would advise against trying to solder wires if you want to maintain USB 3.0 SuperSpeed connectivity because it's very fiddly and very specific on the wires used due to impedance matching. If you're afraid of the connector falling out, you could solder the connector shells ...
