Top Members Secret Santa - Unwrapped

spannerspencer
spannerspencer over 9 years ago

I don't know if everyone's aware, but there's a private section of the element14 Community for the Top Members, who are brought in by invite (as decided upon by the existing Top Members and the element14 team), where they discuss matters around the direction of the Community, where they help out with beta testing Community updates, and even test out new products, RoadTests & Reviews-style. But mostly they just go waaaaaay off-topic and descend into rants and raves about which Minion avatar is the strangest, or who has the biggest... soldering iron.image

Anyway, in December the Top Members all gathered together around the eggnog tree to exchange techno-gifts, which we (The Management) facilitated to some degree by way of distribution. Now, I know the Christmas season won't get into full swing again until late August, but their Secret Santa gifts are now arriving upon their workshop doorsteps.

So I'd like to invite those Top Members to give us all a big unveiling of what they got, who their Secret Santa was and why they chose the gifts they did, and for the whole Community to join in with a few ideas on what these insane elite engineering eccentrics ("improved" meaning for IEEE?) can do with their hot tech gifts.

Merry Christmas!

Hmm? Oh, to become a Top Member is simple, but not easy. All you have to do is make a fantastic contribution to the element14 Community by way of great projects, insightful blogs, helpful suggestions (in Feedback and Support particularly) and generally spending all your free time on here enjoying yourself image  Trust me, these guys see everything that happens, so your efforts aren't going unnoticed image  Keep it up, and you'll be a Top Member in time for this year's Secret Santa!

I've been good all year and .....

    I got a Rock!

    image

along with a fantastic deburring tool, current presence wand and an mbed enabled STM32 F7 Discovery which I really wished for!

The beauty of mbed enabled is that I can program it without the need to install any software on my computer by using the Internet and web browser

My Discovery comes with a colour LCD with touchscreen. - Cool!!

    image

The deburring tool is great for chamfering the edges of freshly cut holes in plastic and PCBs.

The current wand (induction tester) is great for finding the fruit in Christmas cakes and puddings.

Many many thanks for element14's generosity and my Secret Santa whoever that my be (most probably the Great Halloween Pumpkin!) to make some of my wishes come true.

    Very Compact

Got a gift-wrapped code bug which I gave to the SO, ending her X-mas wait.  A BBB which I will eventually put to good use, and this really cool wind-up 'Element 14-man.'  If no one posts a pic of it today, I will endeavor to find my cell-phone so I can take a snap or a vid

    THX!

If you are using that de-burring tool on softer materials, move it quickly, but press lightly

The rock is very chameleon like, blending into the background, very cool but remember "A Rock is for life not just for Christmas"

last night I was faced with this dilemma

Hmmm I am sat here at home and I have in front of me the following:

1 x Parcel addressed to Mr Spanner Spencer Brian Welsby  From Farnell Leeds

    1 x Parcel from tariq.ahmad - Chicago

1 x Parcel from Amazon  - I know what that is.

    1 x Bottle of Jack Daniel's

Which one should I open first?

mcb1 quite rightly pointed out that it should be ...  my eyes

tariq.ahmad was quick to suggest going with Jack

    but then asked

Is it Honey Jacks? Thats lush (but not as nice as the Jim Bean one)

At this point the discussion split , a typical occurrence with Top Members image

mcb1 suggested Honey Jack  should be kept in the freezer and served deeply chilled.

    ------->

anyway meanwhile back to my problem.

Yes with eyes wide open Jack was the first...

Then I opened the Amazon parcel as that contained a flashair memory card for my camera so I can easily wifi pictures to other devices. I installed it and spent a short while configuring and getting the wifi link working.

Then a hello to Jack, just a little sip

Then the parcel from Tariq which was in response to How Were You 'Bit by the Bug' of Engineering & Technology?  It was a very kind gift. Thank you tariq.ahmad and Element 14.  I love the dancing robot and a BBB, stickers and the wrapped up codebug to give to someone. Here's a picture

    image

My eyes then turned to good old Jack or should that be Jack Old No 7,  another sip or two image

    So finally

    image

Ooo thats a big one..  this was from my Secret Santa and contained

    image

The top two tubes contain 2.3inch 8x8 LED matrix displays, 5 red and 5 green (Christmas colours)

The small box is a Logi-Pi LOGi FPGA Development Boards by ValentFX

Both the little blue guy and myself were dancing with joy, lots of great toys to play with.

What shall I tinker with first -

         Oh no another dilemma -

              pass the Jack image

Thank you my Secret Santa whoever you are

Thank you spannerspencer and E14 for facilitating this.

So back to keeping spirits in the freezer what do YOU think?

Always a pleasure, never a chore!

Besides, where else can get hints and tips on soldering, coding, and proper storage of hard booze? I reckon we've got the drunken electronics corner of the internet well and truly sown up here image
