Top Members Secret Santa - Unwrapped

spannerspencer
spannerspencer over 9 years ago

I don't know if everyone's aware, but there's a private section of the element14 Community for the Top Members, who are brought in by invite (as decided upon by the existing Top Members and the element14 team), where they discuss matters around the direction of the Community, where they help out with beta testing Community updates, and even test out new products, RoadTests & Reviews-style. But mostly they just go waaaaaay off-topic and descend into rants and raves about which Minion avatar is the strangest, or who has the biggest... soldering iron.image

Anyway, in December the Top Members all gathered together around the eggnog tree to exchange techno-gifts, which we (The Management) facilitated to some degree by way of distribution. Now, I know the Christmas season won't get into full swing again until late August, but their Secret Santa gifts are now arriving upon their workshop doorsteps.

So I'd like to invite those Top Members to give us all a big unveiling of what they got, who their Secret Santa was and why they chose the gifts they did, and for the whole Community to join in with a few ideas on what these insane elite engineering eccentrics ("improved" meaning for IEEE?) can do with their hot tech gifts.

Merry Christmas!

Hmm? Oh, to become a Top Member is simple, but not easy. All you have to do is make a fantastic contribution to the element14 Community by way of great projects, insightful blogs, helpful suggestions (in Feedback and Support particularly) and generally spending all your free time on here enjoying yourself image  Trust me, these guys see everything that happens, so your efforts aren't going unnoticed image  Keep it up, and you'll be a Top Member in time for this year's Secret Santa!

It's a Raspberry Pi 3 IoT learner kit with case and prototyping kit!

I took it all out and set it up, but I forgot to take a picture and now I'm on vacation. I should have brought it with me for those staying low days! Thank you my Secret Santa!

Indeed, yeah. Maybe in The specified item was not found. -- that'd be awesome Lucie! Let us know if you write it up and we'll give it some promo. I bet a lot of people would be interested in that, if Github hasn't been updated in a while.

The display makes for a fun little device but theres lots of very powerful sensors on there too, it's going to be fun playing with it! Espresso looks fun too!

Im happy to write a detailed guide, where would it be best posted?

If I had one, I'd be looking in Raspberry Pi or asking questions there.

However it could be linked to the documentation for the Pi Hat by one of the admins here.

Ok so I have a fix to get the joystick API working, it involves slightly modifying the sense_hat.py file from the github repo and using that to replace the sense_hat.py file in the /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/sense_hat directory on the raspberry pi, replacing the __init__.py file in the same way and creating a new file called stick.py using the new code from github.

The github repo hasn't been administered since Aug 2016 so I doubt that theres going to be an official fix any time soon, there are a few issues that have gone unanswered on there.

My daughter's Pi3 has a Sense Hat, at the moment it just acts as a colourful bootup light and occasional scrolling message. She's just started Espresso Coding at school and has a Scratch Jr on the tablet, so hopefully will be progressing some something more sophisticated before too long.

Whoops spoke too soon, the joystick functions appear to be broken. Copying the examples in the API results in:

AttributeError: 'SenseHat' object has no attribute 'stick'

Looks like I'm going to be delving into sense_hat.py to find a solution

    EDIT--------------------------------------------------------------

Having a quick look, the sense_hat.py file that installs through apt-get appears to be different to the sense_hat.py file in the git hubrepo. The apt-get version doesn't include compatibility with the joystick so I'm going to attempt to manually install the github version over the top and see what happens

I love the Raspberry Pi Sense Hat, it took less than 2 minutes to get it up and working! I can see lots of fun playing the RGB led's and the API documentation is very clear and easy to read.

For reference, the box doesnt include the Raspberry Pi 3 on the list of compatible devices but it works just fine.
