Top Members Secret Santa - Unwrapped

spannerspencer
spannerspencer over 9 years ago

I don't know if everyone's aware, but there's a private section of the element14 Community for the Top Members, who are brought in by invite (as decided upon by the existing Top Members and the element14 team), where they discuss matters around the direction of the Community, where they help out with beta testing Community updates, and even test out new products, RoadTests & Reviews-style. But mostly they just go waaaaaay off-topic and descend into rants and raves about which Minion avatar is the strangest, or who has the biggest... soldering iron.image

Anyway, in December the Top Members all gathered together around the eggnog tree to exchange techno-gifts, which we (The Management) facilitated to some degree by way of distribution. Now, I know the Christmas season won't get into full swing again until late August, but their Secret Santa gifts are now arriving upon their workshop doorsteps.

So I'd like to invite those Top Members to give us all a big unveiling of what they got, who their Secret Santa was and why they chose the gifts they did, and for the whole Community to join in with a few ideas on what these insane elite engineering eccentrics ("improved" meaning for IEEE?) can do with their hot tech gifts.

Merry Christmas!

Hmm? Oh, to become a Top Member is simple, but not easy. All you have to do is make a fantastic contribution to the element14 Community by way of great projects, insightful blogs, helpful suggestions (in Feedback and Support particularly) and generally spending all your free time on here enjoying yourself image  Trust me, these guys see everything that happens, so your efforts aren't going unnoticed image  Keep it up, and you'll be a Top Member in time for this year's Secret Santa!

Unfortunately, that was part of the codebug packaging. My guess is that they tore through the box instead of sliding it out of its outer cover to see what was inside. I would really like to see the expressions on their faces when they open this stuff. They have an office where the customs guys and UPS guys stand opening boxes, then googling for the item and its price and then sealing them back up.

Its pretty busy and its the UPS guy's responsibility to seal things up again hence the UPS branded tape. I always ask senders to include a list of items so that I know when something... 'fell out'... during inspection.

I have had multiple packages from Oshpark gone MIA in the past as well as packages returned to sender because the local courier was too lazy to deliver. image

Hey Jan Cumps if you attack this project like you do with TI boards, I will bet great things may happen here also. BTW, I plan on using my Secret Santa Pi items to build a remote door greeter with video and more. Can't wait to get things working. Thanks to E14/Spanner as well as my Secret Santa (still wondering who it wasimage)...

That's one of the nicest chips : ) you can program the memory remotely (e.g. with your mobile!) without the device even being powered up, and then read it via I2C. This is super cool for configuring products while they are still in their shipping/packaging : )

The IC is an NXP  NT3H1101W0FHKNT3H1101W0FHK I2C driven and there's a flex-board etched NFC antenna

Although I'm a Philips fanboy since forever (in Belgium and Holland, evey electric or electronic appliance would be a philips until the end of the 70's), I don't know a lot about the NXP catalogue.

So things on the learning path are:

i2c on linux (the board has a yocto distro edit: Poky (Yocto Project Reference Distro) 2.1.1 imx7s-warp),

    NFC

    NPX components (yay!)

NFC is frankly awesome : ) Particularly the NXP parts for this, they have some cool advantages that other manufacturers don't.

Which part is used on that board btw?

    LEDs:

    Top view (for hand-held variant):

    Any 0603 sized LEDs, e.g.

    Red(overload): SML-310VTT86L  or KP-1608SURCK

    Yellow(high): SML-310YTT86M  or KP-1608SYC

    Green(low SML-310PTT86L or low-voltage Blue  KPT-1608LVVBC-DKPT-1608LVVBC-D

(There seems to be a shortage of low-voltage green LEDs currently!).

Side-view (for experimental breadboard variant, might not be as practical to be honest):

    Red(overload  KPA-1606ECKPA-1606EC

    Yellow(high  KPA-1606YCKPA-1606YC

    Green(low  KPA-1606SGCKPA-1606SGC

    Also required 3 x  TLV1701AIDBVTTLV1701AIDBVT

The resistors and 100nF capacitors are all 0603 sized, which I think you will already have, and one 0805 bulk capacitor

    (e.g. 1uF).

    Schematic:

The boxes have gone to good use too. The two smaller ones are now storage in the workshop. The biggest is now a self driving flying car, designed by my daughter.
