Google Getting into Maker Territory

spannerspencer
spannerspencer over 8 years ago

It seems that the Big G has its eye on makers this year, and has launched survey asking for your opinions on what kind of tools it should create to best serve the electronics project builders. There's a distinct lean toward how you might want to see its machine learning put to work with boards like the RPi, and Beaglebone.

Love it or hate it, Google has the power to make some serious impact in the maker community, so it's worth taking the survey, I believe: https://google.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3yMNYryaP4WsCwJ

If you're happy to share, let me know what you opted for during the survey -- be interesting to hear how this Community has contributed its ideas to the tech behemoth's plans. There are a lot of boards, project types and platforms in the survey that you guys will definitely recognise.

I just took it, and felt there were some very poignant questions in there about my maker habits.

Perhaps what's most interesting is that the survey clearly shows that Google's seriously interested in makers, and if Google's interested, it's a vitally important marketplace.

It's not much of a survey.  I wonder what they're up to.

4 questions that don't say very much... interesting, what are they up to.

No age === no survey. Good grief!

I'm sure I had 5 questions (my memory can be quite pish at times). I'm guessing that the questions maybe are shaped around your answers possibly? Age was definitely there and I just squeezed into the oldest but one! image

I think they are just trying to gather information about the maker demographics.

Possibly to gage if the area is worth an investment to dominate.

I had a good amount of questions to include surveys of various areas of interest and even where to I go for Ideas and another of where do I go for technical information.  I had to use the "other" option to add Element14.com for both since neither listed our favorite site.

There are probably better ways - such as sponsoring a few maker contests.

With IBM putting up $100,000 maker contest prizes and Intel sponsoring all sorts of maker activities and targeting entire product lines at makers, it is apparent that blue chip mainstream corporations are investing heavily in the maker sector. Even Microsoft has been making significant strides in this direction.  Google needs to figure out how to get in the game or run the risk of getting caught flat-footed as Intel and Microsoft were with smart phones.
