A Hello from an Electronic Novice

spriteman1200
spriteman1200 over 7 years ago

Hello, my name is Nathan. I'm very excited to join this community because I've been thinking of majoring in electrical engineering. I figure that I enjoy doing math (as of right now I'm in calculus 2) and I'm interested in electronics so electrical engineering only makes sense. I'll be honest though, I have a very basic knowledge when it comes to electronics. I understand how to solder, use a couple of equations, and use certain passive components.  Putting different components together to create some type of circuit without following a schematic is beyond me, but I'd love to learn. I have some ideas for projects, but as mentioned before, putting the pieces together is beyond my knowledge. I'm hoping by joining this community I'll; learn more about electronics, receive answers to various questions, and see if electrical engineering as career is for me. I'm very appreciative towards anyone who can help me with these goals or who can give me some insight on what it's like to be an electrical engineer. If there's something I can answer or help with, I'm more than happy to help, although I'm not sure how much help I'll actually be able to provide. Thank you

I've been through the electronics schooling from technologist to graduate studies. It sounds like you have a better knowledge of electronics than most students who will be enrolling. Most electrical engineering students will see Ohm's Law for the first time at University.

    Also, welcome!

    Hi Nathan!

I call myself a semi-beginner and I just joined this community a couple of days ago. There are some really great and helpful people here and they'll make you feel right at home. I really don't know enough myself to be giving advice but Ohm's Law will take you a long way. I've already learned a lot here and I highly recommend watching the Ben Heck Show. It's not only informative it's entertaining as well. I hope you have a very bright future in electronics ahead of you.

    Hi Nathan,

It looks like you are an excellent communicator and this will serve you very well in your quest for knowledge. I suggest that you find a couple simple projects or builds to begin with and the questions will generate themselves. Electronics is a great challenge that you can have a lot of fun with.

    Hi Nathan,

Welcome to the wonderful world of electronics.

I got started in high school and went on to work on many very advanced projects in the aerospace industry.

So you just never know where your skills can take you.

    Hi Nathan,

Your best teacher can be yourself.

    1) Go find some discarded piece of equipment or small home appliance,

    2) Grab a screwdriver (and maybe a hammer) and take it apart.

    3) See if you can figure out how it works inside.

    4) *** extra credit *** Put it back together again and make it work.

    5) Get a box - put the parts inside the box (this is your stash)

    6) Keep filling boxes with parts and build projects with those parts

    7) Continue ....... until your house fills up with boxes of parts......then get a bigger house....

    Or ..

A house with a basement,.. or a storage shed!

    .

    on another note.

If you work for a large company, see if they have a E-waste area.  Printers and scanners make a good source of motors, screws and other hardware.
