Surplus electronics shops

You wanna see the coolest thing? Since e-ink displays don't require power except when they change, old parts bins full of used e-ink screens are little snapshots of history, as each display is still showing the last thing it ever showed.

This tweet today showed some cool surplus electronics at Hst /halted electronics supply in Santa Clara, CA. Does anyone know of real shops where you can walk in and buy old stuff like this?

I remember Harding's in Cheltenham but it's been years since I was there so I don't know if it's still going.

I picked up a mystery box of components from Freegle last year. Just got around to sorting out the resistors, so far have done about 50 or so. I think it will be something I'll do in the evening as a form…

    Hi Andy,

In a most unexpected place (South Kensington) there is a wacky shop called J.T. Denyer, which sells ancient electrical stuff. Not quite 'surplus', just the store hasn't moved with the times, but in a good way, and still stocks the kind of stuff that was around a few decades ago, like ancient Ever Ready flashlights, etc. Not cheap due to location, but not outrageous prices either. Even their storefront sign is still on the old phone numbering code from two three decades ago image

Also a couple of minutes walk around the corner, there is a cool hardware store, called The Hardware Store : ) which again stocks quite ancient stuff, but also some hard-to-get stuff as well. The store is tiny, but packed to the ceiling. Fun to spend 20 mins in there too.

We have a similar one on Twickenham called Orbit. The man there will order things from a catalogue if he does not have them in stock.

Judging by the sign, I'd say it's been around for 40years.

Cant remember when the telephone numbers last changed but it's not that long ago although it's in the old look at us we are Monospace Stylee style so 80's would be right for the original maybe.(The last change in numbers was in 2000 so it's that age!!)

The JT Denyer  still says 071 so that aint been changed since 1990

It's funny, it's been decades as you say, and yet the phone company still didn't succeed in making people understand the numbering format. That Orbit number ought to have been written as 020 8892... but is written as 0208 892..

The ads were great : )

That could be a London thing. I think of our number as being in that format. There's 0208, 0207 and 0203 for London.
