You gotta love...

... your wife, obviously.  But you gotta love her just that little bit more when she gives you permission to buy a scope image Oh happy days.

I’m thinking Siglent SDS1104x-e.  Should be more than adequate for my purposes for quite some time and not overly expensive.

Hi Frank, That's a good point, if 4-chan use is going to be low (which it often is), if the cost difference is high, a 2-chan 'scope could be better value for money. Even protocol decoding sometimes isn…

I think my first stop will be "how not to blow up your oscilloscope"! And after that, I expect there will be some videos/screenshots of debugging the power supply I'm building. I did think about the 2…

    That's great news!

It looks like a nice modern 'scope, so you've got the flexible trigger types, lots of memory, USB for screenshots, and future expansion option capability. Also it has a large decent res screen + clean-looking layout with the buttons and soft-buttons, which is great for usability.

You will enjoy your new scope I am sure.  I have the Siglent SDS1102 CML which is a 2 channel version of that scope as well as a Rigol DS1054Z upgraded to 100 MHz which is an entry level 4 channel scope I bought used. My Keysight DSOX1102G (thanks again e14!) arrives tomorrow so I am thinking of doing a quick comparison post on the three after arrival.  The Siglent is a competent scope and is the one I have primarily used up until now. There are things about the Rigol I like better but I keep returning to the Siglent because I have had it longer and have familiarity through use, plus I very rarely have need for 4 channels.  I am anxious to see what benefits the Keysight might have.

    Hi Frank,

That's a good point, if 4-chan use is going to be low (which it often is), if the cost difference is high, a 2-chan 'scope could be better value for money.

Even protocol decoding sometimes isn't necessary, it depends on how much control there is over the device under test sometimes.

I used to just visually+mentally decode I2C, without software assistance, and force the device under test to repeat stuff if needed, or to toggle a line deliberately, to trigger on that instead. I had a CRT-based analog scope with storage at the time (Hitachi), which was a nice interim technology before full DSO.

Similarly with SPI, sometimes there is enough information to not need to capture all lines, to do a mental decode.

Lacking your ability to decode serial with my mushware I have been using sigrok and an inexpensive Chinese logic analyzer :-).

I did think about the 2-channel version but the extra 2 channels isn't that more expensive.  I really quite fancied a Keysight but can't justify the cost really; I think that Siglent will keep me happy for some time.  I shall look forward to the comparison though Frank.

Make sure you update the firmware on your DSOX1102GDSOX1102G when it arrives. When I got mine, it was loaded with an older firmware that lacked some of the FRA features.
