In the 70s I learned to program in RPG on my own on an IBM S/38 that my father had in a large clothing store. Then I had a Sinclair ZX81 and built a kit with the Elektor Junior Computer. The Junior Computer…

As a newbie, never had access to a pc in my early years and teens. I was only desperate to know what it is like to have and use one. I'd normally sneak in to have some few strikes on the keyboard of an…

My first computer was the C-64. I was amazed about the speed-up when I programmed a graphic mode clear screen command in Assembler vs Basic. Fractions of a second in assembly vs ~30 seconds in Basic…

It is when its second hand value goes above £1,000 Slight smile

I can't remember the title. Probably something general like 'Digital Imaging' which I have at least three others of the same title. I have been here before - there are two books which I have confused in the past, I've found the other one which has some overlap of content e.g. the Scion Image / NHI Image type tools which allows you to identify and count cells / blobs in an image etc. It may have been moved to my other 'book storage system' (bedroom floor book stacks) the last time and never made it back to the bookcase.

If you are wanting a more modern book then there's Peter Corke's 'Robotics Vision and Control: Fundamental Algorithms in Matlab'. He did a good series of MOOCs on Futurelearn a while back.

Today, the fact that a book is not on the shelf is not a problem. Do you remember what it's called?

I remember running a face detection application on a 80386 in the early 90s which was designed to centre and crop a single portrait photograph into a passport style image for consistency. It took about 15 to 20minutes running flat out to process a single image.

Nowadays of course your pocket phone or camera can do the same in real-time for several faces at once.

In the early days it was quite difficult to learn that sort of stuff.

I recall when the BBC micro came out there were some TV programmes broadcast to support it but to get the listings to follow along you either needed to have Teletext/Ceefax on your TV or write off to the television transcript service to get a hardcopy several weeks later.

No Internet and often no access to a video recorder either. I recall some episodes where they fast scrolled the program listings at the end which you were expected to video record and playback at slow speed. However the TV was probably also your computer monitor...

You know that thing where you know you have a book and you go to get it from the bookcase and it isn't there ? Yup. That.
