6 Decade Resistor Substitution Box

9 Dec 2014

I have finally got round to start building the rest of the tools needed for my electronics workshop. I built this Resistor Substitution Box using 6 x 12 Pole Rotary Switches, 6 x Chicken Head Knobs, 1% 1 Watt Metal Film Resistors, 2 x Banana Sockets and some old thick coax cable for connecting the switches together because of its low resistance. Total Cost £7.19 Total Resistance at 0 = 0.3 ohms all the the way up to 999,999 ohms in 1 ohm increments. I am thinking of building another one and a module to connect them together as a potential divider but i might just add a 10k ohm 10 turn potentiometer and and extra socket to the box for that function.image

Thats an incredibly tidy build you have there! Might end up making one of them.

Nice looking build and well done. I like the use of the electrical box for the enclosure. Thaks for sharing your idea and project. John

    Hi John

As far as i can remember i used Adobe Fireworks and the Pie Tool to space the numbers out equally and i had to use the 2 dashes because the switches where 12 pole then because the printer i had at the time was an inkjet printer i covered the paper with clear sticky tape so it would last longer then folded the tape round the lip of the lid and the nuts on the switches hold down the middle. hope that explains the process in a clear enough way. I also sometimes use half a sheet of a laminating pouch and an iron to cover some labels i make which gives them a nice protective glossy cover.

    Hi Mick,

If you don't mind my asking, how did you do the nice labeling on the unit?

    John

Thank you for your kind words jw0752 and gadget.iom (sorry just used them to get the award) everything i have done is self taught. i will be posting some more complex projects asap and if you need any info about the parts used please feel free to ask.

    All the best Mick
