A lot of people ask me what my company is and what I do, so recently we made this video - enjoy!
Adafruit was founded in 2005 by MIT engineer, Limor "Ladyada" Fried. Her goal was to create the best place online for learning electronics and making the best designed products for makers of all ages and skill levels. Since then Adafruit has grown to over 25 employees in the heart of New York City. Adafruit has expanded their offerings to include tools and equipment that Limor personally selects, tests and approves. Adafruit has one of the largest collections of free electronics tutorials, open-source hardware and software to help educate and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Limor and her company Adafruit are pioneers in open-source hardware and software - from the start of the company the designs and code created have been given away freely for others to learn from and build their own businesses. By giving away the "recipes" young people and educators can learn how to design, build and manufacture their own creations.
Over the last 7 years, Limor and Adafruit have released tutorials, open software and hardware used in schools around the world. The Adafruit resource are now part of some of the most popular teaching tools for electronics and engineering.
Because of Limor's efforts along with many others, it's now a common practice in educational electronics to give away the software and hardware designs as part of product. Adafruit celebrates having a mission of educating while building a thriving business.
It doesn't matter if you're a kid wanting to learn how to make the next popular gadget, or an educator who just wants to have a a great resource for your students to learn engineering. Adafruit has hundreds of free tutorials and videos that teach the basics of electronics, all the way up to advanced engineers - free of charge and available worldwide.
Limor's and Adafruit's efforts have shown it's possible to not only have a goal of education, and to share knowledge freely, but how it's possible to run a business doing so. There are hundreds of people and companies that have been empowered by Limor and Adafruit's designs - they've gone on to make and share their own designs and start their own businesses, all using the hardware and software from Adafruit.
Limor's goal is to make the world a better place by creating great products and showing how they're made so others can learn and share. Adafruit has discovered the more we all give and share, the more we all get back.
