I decided to take the course that Element14 was including in their Road Test, but didn't want to wait to get started. I also wanted to avoid any deadlines as I'll be switching jobs, taking a final, and taking a certification test in the near future. Although the course recommends using the Windows version, I'm running the Linux version of Code Composer Studio on top of Ubuntu 14.04.2-LTS, with a MATE desktop, on a very low-end Gateway AMD64.
I intend to periodically post notes on my progress (initial stuff below) and hopefully provide a contrast to those using the Windows install. After the course is finished, I hope to compile all of the notes and upload them as a single document.
Notes - 12 Nov 2015
I purchased the course from Udemy and what parts I didn't already have from eBay[1] (the Launchpad, the slider, and the push button). The push button[2] and the Launchpad arrived today so I started in on the course's lab notes.
- The first 15 steps were completed without incident.
- In step 16, when I ran "./ccs_setup_6.1.1.00022.bin" as a user, nothing happened. This is because I didn't have the prerequisite packages installed. Linux users should consult the wiki[3] for details on installing the prerequisites.
- It's worthwhile to note that step 16 can take awhile (~15-20 minutes).
- In step 17, when the installer asks if you want to create a desktop shortcut, say yes. The tool does not update Ubuntu's main menu so you'll probably need the desktop shortcut to start the tool. If you mess this up, create a desktop shortcut that points at (using mine as example) "/home/tim/ti/ccsv6/eclipse/ccstudio". Alternately, you can create a menu entry by selecting System/Preferences/Main Menu and adding an entry that points to that location. (Keep in mind that I'm using a MATE desktop and the default path for the CCStudio install.)
Taking a break at step 23.
[1] I made my purchases from Ebay because I had PayPal funds already, and Newark still doesn't accept them.
[2] The smallest lot in which I could purchase push buttons was 10. If anyone needs 1 or 2 of them, make a comment below or send me a message (here or joatblog on Google).
