Ardino Wars

Jan Cumps
Jan Cumps

I'm having a tough time with Arduino. Probably like a number of people these days.

A: There's this sentiment of disgust with how SRL acts as a business partner. But the adult me knows what business is like sometimes. They're all adult. Both LLC and SRL are real businesses operating in the business biosphere.

B: On the other side there's LLC. They have my community and open source support. But they're posting communiques that want to tap into that sympathy. They play the hurt partner. Even though they are also a full partner of situation A.

When adult, big companies start to post emotional posts to get support from a community, warning lights start to flash in my castle.

Please stop that  and take some business worthy decisions as a company.

Check what Adafruit did. They have made decisions based on the dispute. But they have steered away from the emotional part  - even firmly stated that they would not comment on the situation.

In my world, businesses should do business. Feel free to build, or tap into, a community. Both sides win.

Here both businesses are loosing. Maybe we see some great products, but the magic and chemistry are lost. Forever.  All sides lost.

My no-go zone is when a business tries to pull a community into its business affairs. Grow a pair.

I watched an interview from Banzi at Maker Faire yesterday, announcing a new brand with the name "Genuino". Not so subtle naming and clearly meant to hurt the other party. https://plus.google.com/+MAKE…

    ...

I think that end-user for a community oriented company as Arduino.x is something different than end users for (say, because it's their controller on the popular Arduinos)  Atmel.

The real power of Arduino is their representation and value in the maker community. They are huge there. So is their impact, influence and reputation.

There are a number of boards out there that are similarly or lower priced, with much more power.

But that is not what it's about in that playground, is it?

Other large microcontroller, microprocessor and FPGA companies bring out development boards with Arduino compatible headers - when they want to appeal to makers. That about sums it up.

I have to agree that other than the news theatrics going on here like Genuino or Zero, the original Arduino is no longer meaningful in light of the competition. Besides Cypress with their PSoC line, TI is also coming on strong with the MSP420 and Launchpads. There is an onslaught of Cortex M0/M4 processors with feature packed processors and more SRAM/Flash at better cost than Arduino Uno or ???. Even the clones are looking like "me twos(toos)".image The struggle is appearing more like a circus act than a real company. But maybe the real issue is Arduino itself. With each new model like Duo and Yun, they are trying to redefine themself and admitting ARM is the real challenge here. Who win's the court battle in First Circuit (funny place for electonics Ha ha) of Boston will be left with a twisted and crazy market heading in other directions.I looked at Raspberry Pi and Arduino in a Microcenter store just last year in the fall and saw more value with the Raspberry Pi and purchased a Model B (no Model 2 at the time). Why? The Mali GPU picqued my interest.

    Just my two cents here,

    Clem

Oh well. I'm currently discovering the PSoC ecosystem and finding it intuitive to work with, much like I did with Arduino when I first started. As John mentioned, a 4USD for a PSoC 4 proto kit or 10USD for PSoC 5LP, you can't really go wrong. Even other companies like Sparkfun are jumping on the wagon with their newly launched FreeSoC2.

    Btw ...
