ARM and Arduino - finally!

Howdy,

 

Exciting news out the festivities this weekend at Maker Faire NYC and the Open Hardware Summit.  Arduino has announced a new board called the DUE which uses a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller!  They have a full breakdown on their blog: http://arduino.cc/blog/2011/09/17/arduino-launches-new-products-in-maker-faire/

Other goodness includes an improved & lower cost version of the Uno called the Leonardo, an official Arduino Wi-Fi shield and finally the 1.0 release of the Arduino IDE.

    You mean like the Atom?  I think Arduino wouldn't scale to such a platform very well.  Same would go for the BeagleBoard.  Atom and OMAP-based systems offer a complex, powerful array of capabilities and I don't think Arduino's high-level microcontroller programming abstration would be a good fit.  The Arduino would serve better to be the link to the physical world for those systems (tablets, smartphones, netbooks).

     

    But I do think ARM Cortex-M3 support is really important as there is now a common abstration for prototyping from 16MHz 8-bit to 96MHz 32-bit.  In other words, Arduino could be the universal microcontroller development platforom (a lofty aspiration).
