µBlock ate my follow button.

I'm a chrome browser user.  Probably because, well, IE just makes me feel dirty.  I have normally found that Chrome coupled with µBlock provides me with a fairly pleasant, ad free, "happy" browsing experience.  Tonight, however, I noticed that unlike with my Safari iPad browser, Chrome was missing some important buttons on Element14.  Namely, these:  (And that, simply would not do.)

It didn't take me very long to discern what was going on.  The situation was remedied by adding element14.com to my µBlock whitelist.  Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy! Things are back to normal. image  jw0752, this is why I had no "FOLLOW" button.

    Ok, Don,

This was primarily meant to be a PSA on uBlock's effect on element14's buttons.  l agree though, "Probably because, well, IE just makes me feel dirty.", was definitely a biased statement on my part.

I think that we all like to believe that it is our prerogative to make our own decisions.  Maybe it is just that we don’t want to believe that the media, advertising and a market economy affect and in many cases even control our decisions.

I like to think that my disdain for IE comes from my personal experiences with it, but who knows, maybe I have just heard too many rumors about its various vulnerabilities and I have let those fears manipulate my decisions.  Maybe some of those same vulnerabilities are present in Chrome as well and I have just not been made aware of them — I would bet that there probably are just as many.  Nothing is without its own set of problems!  Google is probably capturing all of my browsing history trying to figure out how to make me dislike IE even more, all the while trying to sell me the latest electronic gadget that I just "HAVE TO HAVE”.  Chrome is not perfect, but it is the Koolaid that I have chosen to drink.  I’m comfortable with it, so that is part of my reason.  Honestly, I do use other browsers such as Safari, Firefox, and even IE.  They each have their own set of +’s and -'s.

I have a buddy, that will not eat at Jimmy John’s because the owner shot an elephant, he also will not eat at Chick-fil-A because that owner is anti-gay, and he refuses to shop at Walmart and Sam’s Club because of the way they treat their employees.  That is his prerogative.  If everyone believed that way, there might not be a tasty Jimmy’s sub, or a hot Chick-fil-A sandwich.  I do think that competition and choice are good in the market place.

For now, I going to try to not think about the ethics of my product selections -- "Ignorance is bliss", they say.  Instead I am going to just sit here surfing the web with Chrome, while I enjoy my Coke and a smile.  Oh, LOOK! Chrome is showing me some nice benchtop power supplies that are for sale!

"Probably because, well, IE just makes me feel dirty."

That, I suppose, is the sign of a well-functioning marketing duopoly.  Y'a know.  Coke-Pepsi  Republican-Democrat.  Beatles-Stones.  It is the marketing analogy of good cop/ bad cop.  It recalls the narrow-mindedness of those internet sleuths who parse 'smokes tobacco' to read 'the author is a pothead,'  when there is in, reality, a universe of things one could put in one's pipe!

I drive by Shell, my tank is low, but I think 'But what about the Ogoni?' and pass a BP, they lied about the damage the did to the Gulf.  Then I think, there is no known petroleum company without sin.  And I am depressed.  Then, I pull into Citgo, which is a Venezuelan joint.  At least some of my money goes to a country  seeking to be decently socialized.  Think I will use cash. . .

The typical John Q. doesn't have the means to properly investigate all of the ethics of the vendors who supply him.  But he still needs to think of himself as a good guy.  This little trick lets him off of the hook.
