After playing with the hardware for a while I thought I would see if I could actually make a connection to one of the Bluetooth Christmas Tree light controllers. I eventually managed to download the correct App for my Android smart phone, it is the one with the reindeer and not the one with the Christmas tree (probably - it is not that clear). Regretfully the App does not gather many good reviews with a majority seeming to indicate that the App doesn't work and doesn't connect to the LED controller. I can confirm that the App does not appear to connect. It is not clear why but when it is searching it does not even find the Jutai Bluetooth links. This may be a feature of my Android phone as I have had instances in the past when trying to use the BlueTerm App to connect to a HC-06, where the device had to be directly added to the Bluetooth list of the phone before a connection could be made to the actual device through the App. Unfortunately, my mobile phone doesn't seem to have this capability of adding a Bluetooth device and then connecting through the App. So no success there.
Apologies for the poor quality image, I took the photograph with my camera. The Fresnel fringing is caused by the screen protector I think, and I haven't worked out how to rotate photographs in these Blogs. So much to learn, so little time to do it.
So I gave up with the mobile phone and tried my laptop. From previous experience I have found it difficult to setup a Bluetooth link with Windows and this was no exception. However, I eventually managed to work it out, by adding a device on the Bluetooth menu, which I was then able to get paired, see below - although it did not ask for the PIN, not sure why.
Despite getting it paired I was then unable to make any sort of connection to it. The Bluetooth link did not produce any sort of serial link or COM port number allocation, so the Putty terminal emulator I had hoped to use on my laptop was unable to make a connection. You can see from the screen dump that there are two JuTai Bluetooth links listed as I plugged in two working controllers and it was able to find them both and pair with them.
It may be that it is not creating a serial communication link with the Bluetooth controllers but an actual Bluetooth PAN, which is not much help as I don't seem to have anything that will connect with a PAN. So close and yet so far.
I think I am going to have to unsolder one of the Bluetooth modules next, to see if there is anything more that can be deduced directly from the hardware.
