AT&T’s Code for Car and Home Hackathon, co-sponsored by ACKme Networks, was held at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas on September 6-7 2014.
Hundreds of developers, making up 47 teams, were awarded over $100,000 in prizes.
The hackathon had developers build apps focused on the connected vehicle and home automation. One of the two top winning teams created an app that help solve a key issue in distracted driving, phone calls while driving, while the other winner focused on an app for home safety and monitoring, and reacting to high levels of CO.
Check out the video to see the event:
The hackathon really challenged developers to imagine the car and home of the future and upgrade their non-smart cars to something that helps improve their daily lives. The event was filled with energy as developers and technology providers came together to bring ideas to fruition. To alleviate stress, all participants were armed with Nerf guns, which of course resulted in one of history’s largest Nerf wars!
Sponsors treated developers to a variety of hardware and software products that helped them build apps quickly and a giant thanks goes out to our co-sponsors in making the event memorable to all:

Geotrack Ringback
Winner: 1st Place Car Challenge | Geotrack Ringback provides drivers with a truly hand-free and distraction-free way to communicate with their customers, family and friends. Drivers are able to quickly build a travel plan from their Windows Phone, tablet, or PC. This travel plan is made up of a selection of locations they are planning to visit. This could be anything from client pick up locations, to the grocery story on the way home. The driver's location is tracked via the GPS on their Windows Phone. This data is stored in Azure and then passed through the TCS APIs to create accurate driving time to the next destination. By passing this data through the AT&T Speech API, we are able to generate an audio recording that is uploaded and saved as the drivers ringback tone -- All with no effort from the driver. When someone calls, they immediately hear the current location and time to the next destination avoiding usage fees and saving time -- All without distracting the driver. They can also follow the trip on their Windows device. It is a truly integrated, simple and powerful experience. |
Proximity Alert
Winner: 2nd Place Car Challenge | So, you get the call from the delivery company telling you that your product will be delivered in a four-hour window. That's crazy! Who wants to wait that long for a delivery. Instead, a product, vehicle and customer are associated. When the vehicle with the product approaches the customers home, they are notified of its eminent arrival thus eliminating the long wait. This helps small businesses manage vehicles - even one or two. |
RideSafe
Winner 3rd Place Car Challenge | Your #1 emergency alert sidekick for collision prevention, on the road and off. It also serves as your own personal heart rate monitor for vitals. RideSafe detects proximity of other vehicles near yours including a bicycle. |
Car Bon
1st Place Home Challenge | Cars in enclosed spaces can generate high levels of Carbon Monoxide (CO), which is a colorless, odorless, tasteless toxic gas. This can lead to the death of people and their pets. Our hack adds a sensor to a car that detects CO levels. When it detects dangerous levels, it shuts off the car engine and opens the garage door. |
Avben Jr
2nd Place Home Challenge | Avben Jr is an automated nanny for your toddler, Tom. When Tom goes to bed Avben Jr keeps a safe eye on him by monitoring motions, position, and any sound generated. |
Wearable Home
Winner: 3rd Place Home Challenge | When important notifications occur in your home, appliances, alarms, etc. have those alerts sent to your wearable device using Android Wear APIs and AllJoyn technology. You can then interact with your appliances and your home with voice control technology through your wearable device.
Imagine getting an alert on your watch that your dryer is now complete and then you tell the appliance to continue to air fluff with a voice command until you are home. All of this is now possible with wearable APIs, connected appliances, and AllJoyn technologies. |
Caravan
Top 8 Car Challenge Finalist | Have a safe car caravan with your family and friends? Imagine being able to take a road trip in multiple cars with only one driver to reduce fatigue and keep your loved ones safe. Through this tech, a Volvo owner declares themselves a driver, and other known Volvo owners navigate to the driver and sync to the driver's car using Volvo's automated driver technology and this application. The cars stay together in route following the navigation of the lead car for the remainder of the trip. Future enhancements include car-to-car intercom (to ask for stops), shared music playlists, and possibly even commuter caravans to reduce commuter traffic. |
Daisy
Winner: Unified Challenge | (D)ata (A)quisition and Artificial (I)ntelligence (S)ystem customized for (Y)OU
Daisy is voice command meets the universal remote, except she's a smart, and learning AI. More importantly, she is AWARE of her surroundings, and YOURS. There are lots of competing connected appliances and devices. She unifies them all, intelligently. No need for 100 different apps on your phone, she handles them all and communicates with you directly via text messaging (the newest killer app).
For example, if you are sick at home, your smart thermostat will turn down the thermostat thinking you are at work. Daisy will step in, and keep the house warm so you don't freeze while you are sick.
She monitors your car for maintenance and emergencies. If your car needs an oil change, she'll remind you, and find you a Groupon for it.
When you leave for work, she'll put all the appliances in low energy state, check the door locks, make sure the fridge is closed, the stove, is off, etc. When you come home, she'll warm it up before you arrive. She integrates everything in your home and your life.
Daisy is more than a universal remote (she takes offense to that), she is your adaptive, learning personal life assistant. |
Pulse
Winner: Samsung Accelerator | Time to take personal music creation to the next level. By using Samsung Galaxy Gear’s biometrics and other sensor information, Pulse turns your Gear and your body into a new musical instrument that composes custom music in real time. Your heart rate, temperature, lighting, geo-location and even weather can all combine to create a unique song tailored to who you are at that moment. When you are walking around your house Pulse integrates with your music systems and televisions displaying visuals based on your living music.
Future enhancements include integrating with your car to let your driving information be the seeds that compose the soundtrack to your life. |
RumbleStrip
Volvo Accelerator: Best App focused on Car Safety | As a new teen driver, being handed the car keys by your parents is a hugely emotional moment. The keys represent freedom and another step toward being an adult. On the parents’ end however, this is often a source of endless stress. “RumbleStrip” aims to eliminate this tension by addressing key safety concerns of parents while allowing the teen to maintain their autonomy.
While driving, “RumbleStrip” completely disables the teen’s phone - no texts, Snapchats or Instagram comments to distract them. “RumbleStrip” also provides audio cues to the teen in response to common poor driving behaviors - speeding, hard braking and more, in an effort to teach them good habits. After each drive, the teen receives a drive score and report summarizing how well they’ve performed - encouraging them to continue driving safely while earning the trust of their parents. |
Otto
Winner: Nordic Semiconductor – Best use of Bluetooth Smart | Cars are traditionally a very utilitarian affair for people. With Otto, we made your car into a buddy: one that looks out for you, maintains its own health, and has a quirky personality of its own. When your car comes alive, driving is more enjoyable, safer, and hassle free. |
Hertz Fast Lane
Winner: Best use of Eileo API | No longer do Hertz Gold Plus members have to wait in lines to get to their Hertz rental cars. Now you can walk through the Hertz parking lot using the Hertz Fast Lane app and view augmented reality overlays of cars through your device showing location information, pricing information and availability. You can now select your favorite car, book it through the app, make your purchase, unlock the car and be on your way faster than ever using Fast Lane. |
Trip Narrator
Winner: Best Use of OpenCar | Have you ever been on a bus tour, with a tour guide telling you about interesting things nearby as you drove by? Wouldn't it be nice to have that whenever you take a road trip? And wouldn't it be nice to be able to tell the next people WHO come along about the interesting things you learned on your road trip?
Now, you can do all that! Just turn on Trip Narrator and you'll hear a voice tell you about interesting things around you. And if you like telling others about what you've learned, just leave narrations for the next people WHO drive by and they'll hear your narrations, too.
Control Trip Narrator right from the dashboard with our connected car integration. You can choose what kinds of narration you like (historical places, wildlife, etc.) and with our connected car integration you can also choose to hear about what's going on in your own vehicle, in addition to what's going on outside it.
When you use Trip Narrator, you're safer because it keeps you engaged and awake without requiring you to take your eyes off the road. You won't be as tempted to do something unsafe like checking your e-mail if you're listening to an interesting story from Trip Narrator. |
Pick up and Go!
Best use of NeverLost OTP API Top 8 Car Challenge Finalist | P&G is a smart authentication system where a wearable and app must be present before the car can be engaged. An app for parents of new drivers: Give your child the responsibility they deserve in the safest car in the world. Brand new cars for brand new drivers. Hertz Pick up & Go! Powered by Volvo. |
Connected Baby Car Seat
Top 8 Car Challenge Finalist | Connected Baby Child Seat is a new way to solve the problem when the child is forgotten in the car. It includes child presence sensor, temperature sensor, and connection to the car and to the cloud. How it works: If the child is inside the car and the temperature goes up, the controller will send an alert to the driver's phone and will try to solve it:

MyCar'sOn?
Top 8 Car Challenge Finalist | If you are a parent of a teenage driver, you are concerned about your kid's whereabouts and their propensity to not keep you informed of their changing plans with their newfound driving skills. Our solution is to send you automated alerts without the child having to explictly SMS you, as the aggregated sensor data from the OBD-II car module (or the sensordrone sensing your home) is seamlessly relayed to you when the car/home trips customizable triggers your Watch/Phones/Screens for potential followup action and/or peace of mind. If your car is suddenly turned on, you want to know! |
Car Watcher
Top 8 Car Challenge Finalist | Leave an old device in your car and when you are stopped it will send a message to your phone when something unusual happens like your car is stolen, gets run into, or a baby starts crying inside! |
Glance
Top 8 Home Challenge Finalist | Glance is a context-aware neighborhood watch automation system that is situational and location-aware, cloud-enabled, and it complements any existing home security systems. Glance captures and aggregates radio beacons emitted from Wi-Fi-capable devices in its surrounding, their signal strengths, time of date information, MAC addresses, etc., in real-time to arrive at a heuristically determined "threat level" associated with each device.
For example, when the system detects a suspicious MAC address lingering in-range of its location at 2AM and stays there for a number of minutes and comes back later at 3AM, this activity is logged and may raise the threat level on the home this system protects. The system will communicate this data in real time to homes in vicinity, in addition to triggering a set of preliminary security measures in the home such as turning lights ON/OFF, activating dog barking sound bytes, and turning TV ON/OFF.
The user may manually whitelist/blacklist any devices so they don't get tracked or flagged by the system. |
Jarvis
Top 8 Home Challenge Finalist | Jarvis is a personal assistant in your ear - an audio interface to your smart home and car. Speak to send commands or ask questions: start your car, get the time, etc. Receive passive audio notifications about your home appliances - the stove is ready, the laundry is done, etc. Perhaps most importantly, Jarvis helps you drive more safely. Not only is Jarvis largely hands-free, it also alerts you when it expects that you may not be looking at the road. |
Scraps
Top Eight Home Challenge Finalist | The Scraps app for iOS intelligently suggests a list of meal options on the fly, using a real-time snapshot of your refrigerator!
I can't tell you how many times I have seen people including myself open their refrigerator and just stare at all the misc items, which we call scraps and have no idea what to do with them. |
Wefridgerator
Top 8 Home Challenge Finalist | Wefridgerator makes your fridge fun! We've built a smart and social food management system that makes it easy to keep track of your items, search for recipes based on what you have, make lists of what you need to buy, and more. You can invite your family, roommates, or colleagues to join your fridge, making it easy to share items, organize dinners, and reduce food waste. Wefridgerator integrates with your smart fridge and lets you speak to add items to a shopping list, keep track of expiration dates, and get notifications about refrigerator events, such as leaving the door open, and an increase in temperature. With Wefridgerator you'll learn to love you're fridge! |
