Hello Everyone! I am part of the Unmanned Aerial Systems team at South Dakota School of Mines and Tech. With the recent regulation implemented by the FAA we've seen a decline in academic competitions for aerial systems. Over the last year our team has been working on creating a competition that will be hosted at Sanford Underground Research Facility, South Dakota in 2018. We want to promote unmanned flight builds and research to amateurs and students across the nation.
Our Mission:
To create unmanned aerial vehicles in the pursuit of knowledge, experience and friendly competition with other amateur and student builders. We study all aspects of autonomous flight, from building the frame and studying motor performance, to writing code for communication and navigation. Our team is made up of a wide variety of undergraduate majors - mechanical, metallurgical, Industrial, electrical, and computer engineering, as well as computer science, physics, and math.

The Challenge: Mine rescue
Someone is lost in the mine and your drone is needed to find them.
Fly into an old mine shaft, avoid obstacles, map the area, discover the missing "person" and deliver a flashlight, then return to base camp to deliver your map of the mine shaft.

We are asking for donations to our cause in promoting aerial systems and robotics. All proceeds go straight to the competition being hosted in 2018, and sponsors will receive gifts from the Unmanned Aerial Systems team for their generous contribution.
