For those that like soldering (or at least keeping in practice), the DangerousPrototypes.com people are maintaining the practice of giving away boards. You'll need to buy the components but this is perfect for keeping in practice (soldering) and or building one of their kits on the cheap. Note: they only chose one or two people per drawing, but they (currently) have three drawings per week.
