Getting Better with DC Motors

In the recent Month of Robots competition I made something I called SuperRobot, but disapprovingly it wasn't so super as the DC motors and drivers I selected just didn't seem up to the task of moving the quite heavy chassis. I decided that I needed to get some better DC motors and gain a better understanding of the DC motor driver PCBs that are available for them. recently illustrated some neat and small DC motors with metal gears and I thought they looked so good that I would get some myself to try out.

 

 

I plan to make a small four wheel driver mobile robot to see how good thy are, plus also how small I can make a mobile robot. I still have my TinyMobot (http://https://www.element14.com/community/people/dubbie/blog/2019/02/15/tinymobot-6-the-transparent-version) which I am playing with but that uses continuous rotation servo motors.

    Note that there is also a thin shaft to the back of the motor (the part opposite to the reduction gearbox). It is a very interesting solution I think; this shaft rotates at the real RPM speed of the motor, no matter the reduction applied to the other side, and can be used to connect a rotary encoder for any kind of feedback. Using these motors with the Infineon Arduino DC motor controller shield, as well as with the micro:bit Kitronik's All-in-one robotics board, the speed is very stable when controlled with PWM frequency.
