Hello!

26 Apr 2017

Hello!

I would like to introduce myself, my name is Phil Hutchinson,
I am new on the element14 team and will be helping out in the running of design challenges.

My background is as a Project manager, events manager but also a maker.
I am a member of Leeds Hackspace and plan to attend EMF camp this year in the UK.

This weekend I have become a Cyborg as part of Leeds International festival, I had a Glass NFC Type 2 Tag implanted in my left hand;

Model: xNT Glass NFC Type 2 Tag

Manufacturer: DangerousThings.com
IC: NTAG216 / 13.56MHz

Bioglass: Schott 8625
Size: 2.12mm x 12mm

Projected lifespan: 10-15 years (if NFC is still relevant or my body doesn't reject it! haha)

I will be writing about my experiences over the coming weeks as well as working an a bit of video content of my partner and I being implanted.

In addition to being a maker and a cyborg, I am a sci-fi, anime, music, movie and game fan who spent his time in the world of chiptunes and console modding for most of my teen years.

...Still terrible at soldering....

Nice to meet you all!

I can use it to unlock my phone, but I already have a smart watch and If it is within range of my watch It is unlocked. So I would rather use its limited capabilities for something else.

Photo from   Ecco il “clavigero”: l’uomo che possiede le 2797 chiavi del Vaticano | Il mio Papa

In Latin, the name that identifies his assignment means "the one who carries, who handles the keys." And that's exactly what Gianni Crea does to the Vatican Museums. Quarantatreen, originally from Melito di Porto Salvo (Reggio Calabria), Gianni Crea makes the "claviger". Indeed, he is the coordinator of the clavys, the small team of Vatican employees who every day has the task of opening all the doors of the Museums and closing them every night.

That said, it may seem trivial ... But it is not, because the structure of the Vatican Museums is enormous, vast, and every day the doors to open and close are about 500, of which 300 are in the Museums and 200 are in the various Laboratories linked to museums. And they are doors of all kinds: from those of the most important halls to the bar.

Or it could end up like the wallet full of store loyalty cards, or key chains full of keys of all types  - implant a new chip for every room and device you need access to image

That's gonna leave a mark! image

    I can imagine a conversation ...

Phil :     Hello is that HR department

HR :      Yes how can we help

Phil :     I've just started here in Leeds, and I understand I need to arrange for Access Control to the building.

HR :      Ahh yes, we arrange that, but we normally send you a prox tag, which gives you access.

Phil :     I actually have my own which is compatible with your system. Can I use that.

HR :      We've never had that request before ... ummm ... I guess so.

Phil :     Okay so how do I go about getting it programmed.

HR :      Well I guess you pop it into an envelope and we'd send it away to the security company that supplies them to us.

It might be a week though, and we can't guarantee it won't get lost in the process.

                   ....  Loud clunk heard noise

HR :      Are you there ??

                  ......  a few minutes pass

HR :     Are you there ?   comments to others in the room .... "he seems to have gone".

Meanwhile Phil's colleages are trying to understand why Phil s lying on the floor, apparently having fainted.

    Mark
