History of the Dev Kit

Development Kits have shaped the technology-led world we know today. Originally a basis for prototyping products and applications, Development Kits are now being used to produce some of the world’s most innovative new technologies, from wearables and smart devices, to medical testing systems and the Internet of Things.

To mark the incredible impact of Development Kits, we have charted their evolution in this History of the Dev Kit slideshare. It follows early adoption by the engineering community in the 1970s, right through to the modern day of low cost, open source development platforms.

Thank you for the comments.  Perhaps the title is misleading.  This is not meant to be an encyclopedic history of development kits, more to promote discussion around the areas our members feel were key in history and where you feel development kits are going.  We welcome your input and would encourage more.  In terms of the Design Center, this has been designed based on our members feedback and you will be pleased to hear that Analog will be coming soon.  Lets keep the discussion going.  Give us more of your opinions on the Dev Kit Dilemmas survey element14 Design Center Activities

True - I was so steamed up about the blurring of the micro dev kit history that I hadn't even got on to analogue stuff !

I think this is a bunch of nonsense, if I may be frank. You're only talking about development kits as in 'computing' stuff, and thereby missing everything related to analog prototyping development kits. This is also the issue in the design center.

Also, picking out the Altair and Microchip is not a sample of development kit, but of some product.

The slide show doesn't really chart the development of dev kits at all.

No mention of the kits (which were very widely used) for the Intel 8080, Motorola 6800,  MOS Technology 6502. there were several for each but the ones that spring to my mind were:

    Intel SDK-80

    Motorola MEK6800D2

MOS Technology KIM1 KIM-1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Intel and Motorola both offered full development systems at staggeringly high prices (try Motorola EXORciser pages - Pete´s virtual museum and http://www.intel-vintage.info/inteldevelopmenttools.htm).

I once bought an 8kbyte (yes 8 kilo byte) add on card for a MEK6800D2 which cost about £750, and you needed to make a great many mods to the 'D2 to get the thing to work. We used it to visualise frequency response sweep data on a scope screen.

Later on I had a Motorola Exorset (with 80kbyte floppy drives I think) which was used with a Pentica Emulator for 6809 and other processors.
