Inductance basic understanding

Things Have really changed over the years as to how we learn electronics.. Years ago we did not have the same tools, knowledge, component availability that we have today. My interest began with a Fox hole radio I had to make by hand giving me a general understanding of coils / Induction then moving on to adding air core capacitors ( variable ) to the Fox whole radio seeing first hand as to the changes that have taken place and understanding why those changes are taking place. then getting into applying signal diodes into the mix and learning, experiencing changes as to what the diodes are doing and why...

I can imagine to most of you this would be child's play. but for some I would just like to say there is nothing wrong with basics. Not everyone can afford a college education or have the time to go to school.. but if you really have the desire and the passion to learn electronics from experience a Fox hole radio is a great start ! You can be your own teacher and never be afraid to ask questions. one simple project can and will take you a long way

    I agree.

After fifty years of learning and being involved with many different projects, there is nothing wrong with self learning.

Every once in a while it benefits everyone to sit down and review what they have been taught to see if the the understanding has changed.

When I did so a few years ago I came up with a solution to Einstein's Unified Field Theory that explains many issues that conventional physics has failed to solve.

I had to google fox hole radio, but totally agree, it can be a great start. From my perspective a crystal radio is the single childhood project I could probably attribute to continuing to want to experiment with electronics.

Kids today still get a fascination hearing a radio they have made (some of the kits need an engineer nearby during assembly, I appreciate this isn't possible for schoolteachers as easily. I tried a ZX2051 kit with some kids).

The diode could be a schottky diode, but the capacitor is a bit of a problem (tuning caps are hard to find locally nowadays, although aliexpress is always an option) so the air core inductor could be adjustable instead. Crystal earphones are still available.
