Microsoft Surface Mobile Mouse Teardown

The Microsoft Surface Mobile mouse is a great mouse, very comfortable but sometimes it gives problems due to dirt or wear.

In this blog we are going to see how it can be disassembled to clean or repair it.

The victim

Our victim is the Microsoft Surface Mobile Mouse. It is a lightweight and portable mouse with smooth scrolling and dongle-free BluetoothRegistered connectivity.

Step 1

Switch off the mouse. On the bottom of the mouse press the bluetooth button to switch it off.

Then push the bottom part of the battery cover. Slide forward the battery cover to remove it.

Push and pop-out the batteries with your fingernail or a flat plastic tab.

Remove the two AAA alkaline batteries.

Step 2

Remove the mouse cover.

Start removing the mouse cover from the side opposite the buttons.

The cover is held together by cylindrical pins in the black intermediate layer that are inserted into two holes in the upper layer.

Don't start removing the cover around the button area. The movable flaps that press the buttons are trapped by two brackets that limit their movement by means of pivots in the intermediate layer.

Step 3

At this point, you have separated the mouse cover

Remove the six torx screws.

Remove the middle layer

Now you can clean the mouse or repair whatever is necessary.

Step 4

Finally, to reassemble it, put the intermediate layer again.

Screw it and finally put the top cover back as you will see in the video.

First insert the brackets from the top flaps of the mouse cover into the flat pivots of the middle layer by sliding horizontally until they engage.

Test that the three buttons click correctly.

Then carefully apply vertical pressure to the rear so that the circular holes are inserted into the two pivots on the black part.

You're done.

If you don't know what to do with the mouse anymore, it has a nice rotary encoder that can be scavenged:

Hi Enrique, Great teardown! I have the same mouse for one PC, and I like that the battery lasts for ages with it, even with many hours use daily.. longer than a year on two AAA cells.
