It is appropriate that we begin in China, which has the biggest market in mobile phone retail sales.
The giant Apple Corporation is well renowned for producing the Apple iphone, one of the best selling world brands, in addition, of course to the iPad and the Apple Mac computer. Moving out of the United States, the Canadian based multinational mega-corporation, Research in Motion makes and retails a wide range of Blackberry hand held devices. Founded in 1984 from Waterloo, Ontario, its presence in the worldwide Smart Phone market makes it unquestionably a real giant in its field.
Away from North America, another major international presence in the world of mobile phone technology was established with the merger of the Sony Corporation and Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson in 1991, making it one of the world's major producers of portable phones and mobile technology.
Based in Scandinavia, like Ericsson (one of the limbs of Sony Ericsson) Nokia, the Finnish Multinational can also rightly claim its place amongst the major producers of mobile phones in the world. From its headquarters close to Finland's capital city, Helsinki, Nokia produces a multimillion dollar supply of mobile phones and is easily the biggest company in Finland.
The Far East is a hotbed of activity in the mobile phone production world, with several major producers of the most popular technologies. In Japan, there is the Panasonic Corporation, based in Osaka and founded as long ago as 1918, which produces a variety of products. South Korea, which is a leading centre of mobile phone production is the home of the two multinational corporations of Samsung, founded in 1938 and based in Samsung Town, Seoul and LG, founded in 1947 in Busan and now headquartered in Seoul. South Korea also houses the smaller, yet still productive Pantec Corporation, founded in 1990 and based in Digital Media City, Seoul. LG also has its own South Korean subsidiary, Cyon.
China, which is fast developing in numerous areas of production consequent upon the worldwide recession also has several mobile phone and accessory producers, amongst which number, Huawei, based in Shenzhen and Ningbo Bird, founded in Shenghua. The developing home market is surely going to result in an ever increasing production line of Chinese mobile phone manufacturers and retailers, whilst neighbouring Taiwan has amongst its own major producers BDTel, HTC, BenQ and Inventec.
There are several smaller European producers in addition to those already cited, including, Finnish Benfon, which produces the Twig range of mobile solutions, InQ, based in London, United Kingdom and Neonade, a manufacturer of touch screens from its base in Sweden.
