My Verilog Diary - 0 : Introduction

1 Oct 2017

I want to improve my skills on FPGA design so I decided to cover Verilog/System Verilog from scratch. I believe one of the best methods of learning is teaching, therefore, I will have a diary of my progress. Hopefully, it will help other community members too.

What I have planned to do is start from the very beginning of Verilog to go deep topics as long as I go. Not only cover the syntax of the language but also mention digital design methods I need to implement that subject and FPGA implementation of the task. I know it is very time-consuming and there will be always something prevents me to write but I will do my best to write weekly posts.

I will be using Verilog HDL - A Guide to Digital Design and Synthesis written by Samir Palnitkar. I will be happy if you suggest books you like so learners can buy them.

Currently, I have DE0-Nano board (thanks to Element14 roadtest). I think it is sufficient for covering many subjects. If you have any suggestion I am happy to listen to you image

You can follow all the articles related to my verilog diary by searching my_verilog_diary or coming to this post. I will update this post if there is an update.

Hi Duncan, Thanks for the recommendation. Michael also recommended that book. I will check that one and buy it. From programmer's perspective, HDL languages are strange. But, I can understand that because…

Great idea, I look forward to your posts. If you do some searching, you will find a fair number of older HDL and VHDL tutorials and examples. HDL has a very long history. I remember numerous EE friends…

As you said there are aplenty of documents out on the internet. I will benefit them and share my experience here It won't be exactly the verilog tutorial. I can say it will be more like my verilog adventure…

That sounds interesting - look forward to reading your diary.

Another good method of learning is by doing, so you'll have that one covered too.

I can't recommend any Verilog books.

The only VHDL book I've got is 'VHDL for Programmable Logic' by Kevin Skahill. It dates from 1996. All the examples use Cypress devices and design tools because he worked for them and wrote the book in company time. It seemed to work ok for me - I didn't have any trouble writing HDL for their devices [large CPLDs with memory blocks] and, later on, the VHDL skills were quite transferable for working with Xilinx FPGAs.

    Great idea,

I look forward to your posts.

If you do some searching, you will find a fair number of older HDL and VHDL tutorials and examples.  HDL has a very long history.

I remember numerous EE friends of mine who got into HDL and VHDL to design complex circuits, so I know there is a lot of documentation hanging around, you just need to go out and look.
