  Who I am

I am a senior Electronic Engineer with a long experience in the electronics field (I built my first radio equipment in 1959, when I was seven years old).  I took my first steps in a tv and radio repair laboratory, under the guide of my father.

My professional activity started in 1968 in a Silverwares Factory owned by my family, where I was in charge of the design, construction and maintenance of the electrical equipments (ovens, motors, silver-plating plants, lost wax casting, anti-burglar system and tele-surveillance system).  In 1974 I had my first approach to computer programming.

From 1974 to 1978 I developed electronic devices for automatic controls, security and tele-monitoring systems, RF transmitters and power amplifiers for VHF broadcasting, microprocessor based control systems and software.

From 1978 to 1981 I was analyst of organization at SIT Siemens in Palermo - Italy.

I was Researcher-designer, from 1981 to 1987, in the R&D laboratory on microwave electronic tubes at ITALTEL and SELENIA in Palermo - Italy, I developed mathematical models and software for the analysis and simulation of electric and magnetic fields, of generalized Laplace and Poisson fields, of thermal structures and of electron guns for linear electron beam microwave tubes and for gyrotrons.  I developed methods and software for the automatic design of electron beam guns. I designed electron guns for klystrons and gyrotrons for thermonuclear fusion. I developed the preliminary design of a special electron gun for tethered satellites.  I built prototypes of electron guns and I participated to the design, construction and test of complete microwave tubes.  I managed the computing center of the R&D laboratory and the CAD/CAM systems.

From 1987 to 2011 I was Technical Manager in three different Companies.  In these Companies I coordinated the design and production of electronic devices made on customer’s specifications, of test systems for electronic devices, of monitoring and control systems for industrial processes, of data acquisition systems (meteorological, hydrometric, etc.), of microprocessor based automatic control devices for electrical distribution networks, of electric energy consumption optimization systems.

I directed the design and the production of microprocessor based devices for the automatic control of medium voltage (24 kV) electric boxes, of electronic instruments for measurement and protection in medium voltage, of devices and systems for the telecontrol of electric energy distribution networks, of other electronic devices for industrial applications.

I directed the design of telecontrol systems for water main supplies, for city water networks and for big irrigation networks (about 40 projects).

I directed the construction of the automation and telecontrol system of a water main supply system, including the high power sections, in medium and low voltage, of the pumping stations (about 5 MW of installed power), the construction of the telecontrol system for a water treatment system, the construction of the telecontrol systems for two big irrigation networks, the construction of many other smaller systems.

I developed a system for the analysis of the environmental impact (for power lines and other works), with automatic GPS acquisition on the field and graphic computer simulation.

I developed a preliminary design for an automatic localization system for mobile vehicles, using the newborn GPS satellites.

I coordinated courses and training stages for students of technical and professional institutes.

I managed the design, up to the prototypes construction and testing of Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) for telemetry and telecontrol systems, using mixed analog and digital technology, with the implementation of a special communication protocol and power supply system.

I was Project Manager, from 1991 to 1993, of the "Informative Territorial System for the Agriculture" and of the  "Informative Agrometeorological System", for the "Telematization Plan of the Sicily".

I managed the design and production activities of electronic devices for industrial applications (measurement systems, interface systems, welding systems, solid state voice systems, monitoring systems, auxiliary devices for aircrafts).

I designed and implemented a PLCs based automatic control system for microwave electron tubes high vacuum stations.  I also developed a special SCADA software (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), based on relational database, for the above-mentioned high vacuum stations.

I designed and developed the microprocessor based power supply, control and communication sections for the real time control of a Solid State Microwave High Power Amplifier.  I also developed software packages for the final tests of such devices.

I designed and developed a portable Electrocardiograph specialized for telemedicine applications using advanced digital signal processing technologies.

I developed the preliminary design of a phased array ultrasonic scanning system for the dock positioning of ships, of a guided-wave multi-user telephonic system, of a DSP based digital communication system for deaf and dumb people, of a microchip for integrated DNA amplification.

I held a post-graduate course on the analysis of environmental impact by computer simulation.

I made a study on particle accelerators new technologies and on a spread-band pulse transmitting systems.

I developed and implemented many automatic systems for the test of microvawe Traveling Wave Tubes and other microwave devices and components.

I developed a test and calibration system for military devices for night vision.

As United Nations Consultant, I designed and directed the works of a tele-measurement and tele-control system for the water supply and water distribution network in the city of Hebron in Palestine.

I was Project Manager of a research program on Biosensors, leading a team of electronic engineers and biologists.  We developed Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) Biosensors  using micro-litography techniques (Electrowetting Biosensor).

I held a post-graduate course for electronic engineers, on digital filters.

I designed and built an automation and tele-control system for the water wells feeding the city of Santiago de Cuba.

I studied a method of identification of small aquatic organisms (zooplankton, fish eggs and larvae, etc.) using the integration of technologies based on pattern recognition by optical imaging, on analysis and classification by laser diffraction techniques, on the analysis of VHF ultrasound acoustic images,  and on  acoustics diffraction analysis.

I participated in a research project on nanotechnology, developing a preliminary design of cold cathode electron guns, based on carbon nanotubes, to be used in Terahertz Microwave Devices.

I developed many systems used in X-ray technology for astrophysics:

  • A monitoring and control system of a high vacuum plant for X-ray collimation on long distance (about 30 m).
  • Many data acquisition and analysis systems for different types of X-ray detectors.
  • A control system for a superconductor cryostat capable of reaching 0.03 °K.
  • A shielded room for measurements on X-ray micro-calorimeters at cryogenic temperatures.
  • A control system for the micro-manipolation of devices under high vacuum.
  • A  system for the automatic control of the density of gases used in X-ray detectors.
  • A simulation software used in the design of electron guns for X-ray sources (electron_gun).

In my private laboratory I make extensive use of 3D printing for the construction of mechanical parts, together with conventional tools (lathe, milling machine) and CNC tools

(CNC Drill / Milling Machine - Winder).

I have used many computer systems with 10 different Operating Systems.

I have developed software using 16 different programming languages.

I make extensive use of CAD and Simulation software.

I am author of 14 original scientific papers.

Now I'm working mainly as independent researcher and as consultant for  the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics, for the Physics Department of the University of Palermo and for the Microwave Devices factory of Selex ES in Palermo.
