Who I am | ||||||||||||
I am a senior Electronic Engineer with a long experience in the electronics field (I built my first radio equipment in 1959, when I was seven years old). I took my first steps in a tv and radio repair laboratory, under the guide of my father.
My professional activity started in 1968 in a Silverwares Factory owned by my family, where I was in charge of the design, construction and maintenance of the electrical equipments (ovens, motors, silver-plating plants, lost wax casting, anti-burglar system and tele-surveillance system). In 1974 I had my first approach to computer programming.
From 1974 to 1978 I developed electronic devices for automatic controls, security and tele-monitoring systems, RF transmitters and power amplifiers for VHF broadcasting, microprocessor based control systems and software.
From 1978 to 1981 I was analyst of organization at SIT Siemens in Palermo - Italy.
I was Researcher-designer, from 1981 to 1987, in the R&D laboratory on microwave electronic tubes at ITALTEL and SELENIA in Palermo - Italy, I developed mathematical models and software for the analysis and simulation of electric and magnetic fields, of generalized Laplace and Poisson fields, of thermal structures and of electron guns for linear electron beam microwave tubes and for gyrotrons. I developed methods and software for the automatic design of electron beam guns. I designed electron guns for klystrons and gyrotrons for thermonuclear fusion. I developed the preliminary design of a special electron gun for tethered satellites. I built prototypes of electron guns and I participated to the design, construction and test of complete microwave tubes. I managed the computing center of the R&D laboratory and the CAD/CAM systems.
From 1987 to 2011 I was Technical Manager in three different Companies. In these Companies I coordinated the design and production of electronic devices made on customer’s specifications, of test systems for electronic devices, of monitoring and control systems for industrial processes, of data acquisition systems (meteorological, hydrometric, etc.), of microprocessor based automatic control devices for electrical distribution networks, of electric energy consumption optimization systems.
I directed the design and the production of microprocessor based devices for the automatic control of medium voltage (24 kV) electric boxes, of electronic instruments for measurement and protection in medium voltage, of devices and systems for the telecontrol of electric energy distribution networks, of other electronic devices for industrial applications.
I directed the design of telecontrol systems for water main supplies, for city water networks and for big irrigation networks (about 40 projects).
I directed the construction of the automation and telecontrol system of a water main supply system, including the high power sections, in medium and low voltage, of the pumping stations (about 5 MW of installed power), the construction of the telecontrol system for a water treatment system, the construction of the telecontrol systems for two big irrigation networks, the construction of many other smaller systems.
I developed a system for the analysis of the environmental impact (for power lines and other works), with automatic GPS acquisition on the field and graphic computer simulation.
I managed the design and production activities of electronic devices for industrial applications (measurement systems, interface systems, welding systems, solid state voice systems, monitoring systems, auxiliary devices for aircrafts).
I studied a method of identification of small aquatic organisms (zooplankton, fish eggs and larvae, etc.) using the integration of technologies based on pattern recognition by optical imaging, on analysis and classification by laser diffraction techniques, on the analysis of VHF ultrasound acoustic images, and on acoustics diffraction analysis.
I participated in a research project on nanotechnology, developing a preliminary design of cold cathode electron guns, based on carbon nanotubes, to be used in Terahertz Microwave Devices.
