I got to thinking, if the raspberry pi 3 ever supported google's android os then you could in theory create a handheld console. yes I have seen it done in other projects and in The Ben Heck Show, however they were usually just for emulation.
My thought is bringing the Idea to a market if possible.
The Plan,
Wait for the Raspberry Pi 3 A+ or something a bit smaller than the B.
Cut down on what is not needed.
Features of the console.
7" LCD Touchscreen in 480p 16:9 @ 60Hz
Raspberry Pi 3 B or better
Rechargeable battery pack that will give 5 - 7 hours of game time.
Custom Android OS if possible, if not then a custom Linux OS.
One Small Analog stick with precision head.
D-Pad with High Quality tactile buttons, and bumpers.
Kingston 32GB SDHC card internal memory.
USB 3.0 if possible, if not then a 2.0.
Headphone Jack and Built in Speakers.
Maybe the camera from Pi to do something similar to the 3DS where when you aim with Link's Bow you can move the system?
SD Card Reader if possible.
GAME SUPPORT.
Indie Developers get cheap SDK to create games and sell on the Consoles online store for whatever price, Tax included in price.
Big Developers get to port old games like Original DOOM or even Quake to the console and sell on the online store, Tax included. (doubt they would ever port or make new games.)
My Game Development studio would create for it as well, so some exclusive titles.
Free to Play Games.
Mod Support.
Homebrew Support using SD cards, USB Drives, or put on the consoles Homebrew Store. MUST NOT BE IN VIOLATION OF COPYRIGHTS.
A ton of this is hypothetical at best and I doubt i will ever make this a reality, but one can dream up some idea.
Disclaimer, I might make a prototype, if i can figure it all out. If I do I might make a showing at a convention such as PAX or MAKER.
I'll do a post later if I decide to go for it.
Let me know what you think.
