STM32WB55 - New STM BLE5.0 Nucleo Pack

image Please comment if you would be interested in a thorough review of the following kit....... If there is interest, I would be happy to write up a Road Test type review of this kit and include a lot more detail than what is here.

I was lucky enough to attend one of the STM32WB Workshops today where I received and learned about the new STM32WB55 Nucleo Pack.

It uses their new BLE5.0 enabled MCU - the STM32WB55RGV6.

image

The kit comes with:

  • A Nucleo board with the usual Arduino header

     image

  • A USB board - both with an STM32WB55 MCU.

     image

The MCU is a new product line from ST that will be fully released in 2 weeks time.  This kit is a pre-release version.

It contains 2 separate cores:

  • Arm Cortex-M4 for the application layer
  • Arm Cortex-M0 with radio co-processor that supports BLE5.0 and 802.15.4 for the radio and protocol layers.

The radio protocol layers are completely separated from the application layer with this architecture.

Here is a brief video of the board in operation..... (Sorry about the bad quality video!..... I really need a tripod of some sort - any video taking tips will be appreciated! image):

Hi Tony, I notice that it is Mbed enabled from the packaging in your photo. I would be interested in hearing about that if you get around to trying it out. Frank

    Hi Frank,

Yes, they have produced a lot of boards that are mbed enabled - in fact I think pretty much all their Nucleo boards are mbed enabled.  I remember when mbed started and it was just the LPC1768 board!!

I am definitely looking forward to them releasing the libraries for this board and seeing what examples are made available.    I'll keep you posted.image

    cheers

    Thanks Tony,

I am mostly curious how easy it is to set up and use BLE with Mbed.  STM seems to be one of the more active players with Mbed so I am hoping their support and implementation of libraries is good.

    Hi Frank,

Yes - absolutely, I would be happy to write something up on the mbed interface part of the board.

The only problem currently is that as the board is pre-release, it is not yet featured on the mbed website and does not have the libraries available specifically for this kit.

I did a search on the mbed website for all ST boards and I cant see it there.

I am hoping ST publish the mbed libraries for it in 2 weeks when the fully release it.  As soon as they do, I will test it out.

In terms of basic mbed functionality, the board shows up as a flash drive when plugged into a PC which allows 'drag-n-drop' programming.

    image

It has the usual MBED.HTM file which takes you to the mbed website and allows you to sign up to use their online toolset.....

    Cheers
