That all important first post

Well, i've been meaning to do this for a while and here it is, my own little blog.

The aim is to try and document the slow process of discovery that I am going through whilst playing with an Arduino, Raspberry Pi, TI Launchpad and anything else I can get my hands on for reasonable cost that looks like fun :-)

I hope from the lessons I learn and the mistakes I will inevitably make I can help someone else. If not, at least I've had some fun doing it anyway.

I have recently been lucky enough to take delivery of a Raspberry Pi which will feature heavily in his blog. From looking around so far, there seems to be a gap for people like me that are reasonably 'technical' but not necessarily in areas that the Pi requires. I dabble in Linux, but i'm nowhere near a power user, I know a bit about electronics, but I'm not building a Geiger counter anytime soon, I understand logic and basic programming, but I'm not going to be writing assembler in the next year.

I do like trying to learn though and if I can save someone else from head scratching then that can only be a good thing.

I think the second post will be along the lines of editing config.txt for the raspi, as currently my start button is off the screen and it makes life a little difficult. Whether this is my cheap HDMI cable (from Sky, thank you) not negotiating with the pi properly I don't know, but it will be the first thing I fix.

Hello DAB, thank you for taking the time to reply. I think you have put more eloquently what I was trying to say, I have learnt a lot from forums like these but never felt that I have anything to give back, as my experience wasn't enough to fully contribute. I have come to the realisation that although I can't contribute to the to more in depth technical discussions (but I do try and learn from them) I can help people like me, just starting on the path to picking things up and at the same time help myself, as trying to break down the problem to communicate it clearly will help to solve it as you say.

Thank you again for your reply, it is good to know at least one person is reading my blog !

    Hi Steve,

I think your goal is what all of us are trying to do in our own way.  We each have interests and ideas and dreams.  By sharing our experiences, we enhance the collective knowledge of everyone within the group.  If you have been a member a while, you can see that there is no right or wrong way to do a blog.  Just pick a subject and tell use what you found and what you think you learned from the experience.

I have often found that taking the time to explain a problem to someone else, I find the solution.  Its part of that slowing down to think about what you are doing and breaking the problem down to its explainable parts that lets us fully understand what we are trying to do and what we need to do to make it work.

I look forward to your future posts.  Even after 40 years of advance systems development, I still find new ideas and solutions from the most unlikely sources.  Mostly, I like to mentor young people because they do not know what they can do until they are challenged.

    Good luck,

    DAB
