I found my way to Element 14 through several steps.
1) Have a unique business idea for a rather narrow market. This idea will blend technology and real life situations
2) Research different options to make this work.
3) Order a Raspberry Pi and Arduino to start experimenting/learning
4) Collect info/educational materials that start with the very basics and work up
5) Trip upon a good book called: Exploring Arduino: Tools and Techniques for Engineering Wizardry
6) Trip upon a good set of YouTube videos by Jeremy Blum.
7) Follow Jeremy's suggestion to seek more knowledge/assistance from Element 14.

I will have to admit, at first glance I feel a bit intimidated. I am not an engineer by trade. I am more a tinkerer/make-it-work/figure-out-why-the-remote-control-works kinda guy. I've done a little bit of scripting in Linux, done lots of command line work in all sorts of environments, and am always surrounded by geekdom 'stuff'.
I'm going to finish the book and videos and go from there. My project will involve RFID, mySQL, and software creation to make it all work in harmony.
Crossing my fingers and diving in, well maybe more like belly flopping....
