VERY Strange idea

Ok, I am sure I am not the first perso that has thought of this, but here is a very strange idea.

I would need some serious help with it though if anyone if game.

Has anyone ever thought of driving a stepper motor with relays instead of transistors?

I know it wouldnt be able to go fast as all because of the slow action of relays, but imagine how cool it would look and sound.

I would love to make a demonstration piece like this if it is in fact possible.

I would like to find clear relays as well so you can see through the case and see them working.

I am thinking something like a three dialed clock with seperate dials for hour, minute and seconds using 3 seperate steppers.

possibly at least one of each a unipolar and a bi polar if I could make them each work.

I need help and opinions of if you think this would work

And would probably need help coding this as well, but I think I could figure that out, it should be a pretty simple code.

    Hi Andrew,

You are describing an old style telephone exchange implentation.

I used to work for GTE in my very young days and relays were all the rage since they were easy to use and the logic was simple.

The downside was that relay contacts get dirty, especially when they are moving heavy current around.  A really big pain to maintain, that is why the telephone industry went digital early.

I agree that you could make a very impressive device that could whirl and click to amuse the observers, but I am not sure I would do anything serious with them.

    Just a thought,

    DAB
