Your Mobile Phone Requires No Switching Off On a Plane

There are three airlines in China that tend to test the communication service on plane. It expects to be 15 RMB per minute. "The aircraft has come into a flight attitude that is parallel to the surface of the earth. Please turn off your mobile phone." The common warning may step down from the stage of history in the near future time.

Air China, China South and China East showed that they had signed the development agreement of communication software with the mobile operators on the airline communication seminar launched by China Air Transport Association and other Airline companies yesterday. Once it's approved, the passengers can make calls freely on plane. It's charged about 15 RMB per minute.

Passed the safety test

Because of the technical reasons, the mobile phone and internet is not allowed to use on China airlines until now. The experts explain that the main reason why the daily used mobile phone can't work in the high sky is the ground signal of the mobile operator can't cover the high sky.

In other countries, few airlines provide passengers with the international Maritime Satellite Telephone Service to make amends. But CTTC (China Transportation and Telecommunication Center) expert at the meeting think the special telephone service is impossible to be provided for all passengers. For one thing, the cost is very high. For another, it's lack of large capacity.

He described that many technology platforms had been developed around the world at present which can connect the ground mobile signal with the satellite signal. It's like make IP call through the fixed phone or make call through the computer. Of course, the aircraft must be modified and corresponding equipments should be added.

Waiting for the approval of the government

The China Air Transport Association said two mobile communication operators have signed outline development deal of the mobile communication software with China Airline, Airline South and Airline East in July, August and September last year. And the application of the operating authorization has been submitted to the National Civil Aviation Authority. It can be put into operation after it gets the approval.

In fact, ZH once signed a contract with Switzerland OnAir in 2007 and became the first airline company applying the personal mobile communication technology on plane in China. However, the program wasn't approved finally.

The China Air Transport Association experts said frankly that the launch of the business was based on the premise that the airlines and communication operators can get the approval from the government.

Twice or even 3 times as much as the ground call rate

The vice president of Air China cabin service department pointed that the passengers needed repeated reminder of turning off the phones. The passengers need to contact with the outer world. He believed that the realization of calling in the sky will attract and satisfy the travellers a lot.

The expert thinks the charge (more than 1 dollar per minute) on the foreign airlines is cheaper than the Inmarsat satellite phone. The network expense can be charged as to the flow rate.
