Atmel no more?

With the recent announcement of Microchip acquiring Atmel, I was wondering what will happen? I read this http://makezine.com/2016/01/25/why-im-excited-that-microchip-is-buying-atmel/  which leads me to think good things. But who know where the portfolio of Atmel end up. Time will tell.

A microchip conference writes about PIC programming and  hardware. Last sentence adds "... and Atmel too." image

Microchip was part of a hostile takeover attempt in 2008. I suspect they have considerable work to do to achieve cultural alignment and I hope they don't lose too many key people in the process. Ultimately, it should be a better, bigger, stronger company and I'm sure they are all motivated to get there, but expect a little short term diversion of focus towards meshing the cultures and product lines.

I really like Mircochip low-cost analog chips and Atmel MCU designs, as do lots of others, and I fully expect to get the best of both worlds, even after the dust settles. I don't expect a huge change in prices as there is still lots of competition in their markets, but hopefully the Atmel parts could come down a bit as Cortex M0 is encroaching on their turf.
