Raspberry Pi with dAISy Hat running OpenCPN on Official 7" Display

The Element14 community was kind enough to award me a prize in the Open Arduino contest and with the award I purchased one of the official displays for a Raspberry Pi.  I have wanted a portable marine traffic monitor for some time and this is what I came up with:

image

It turned out quite nice, went together easily, and can be put together at a reasonable cost.  The project is a good demonstration of how powerful the Raspberry Pi is.

Components:

  • Raspberry Pi 3 Model B
  • Raspberry Pi 7" Touchscreen Display
  • Smarti Pi Touchscreen Case
  • dAISy AIS Hat
  • OpenCPN Chart Plotter Software

A wireless mouse for user input and a small "rubber duck" antenna for reception complete the project.  I really like the Smarti Pi enclosure - makes the screen much more useable.  What have other people done with their awards?

Frank, That looks like a great setup. Something I recall with people making audio/entertainment systems using the RPi, is the ability to power it on and off easily - could you add a few words please on…

Hi Rod, Thanks... For the moment I haven't done anything to upgrade powering on and off although that is something I would like to pursue. I admit to being a casual RPi and Linux user and currently I have…

    Hi Frank,

Nice work and excellent build. This is a very practical application of the Raspberry Pi in the real world.

The SmartiPi Case is in my opinion, the best case designed for the 7" display and Pi 3. With slight modification of the back cover to accommodate the PoE header, the Pi 3B+ is the perfect upgrade.

Thanks... I just received mine and my friend says the cover has changed and has a notch for PoE - I am assuming it the notch lower left.  I also ordered a back hat cover because of the dAISy hat.
