ACK!  I'm a lefty for a while.....

12 Dec 2017

Looks like I we be going lefty for a while.  I went into surgery to clean up a couple of bone spurs in my right (primary) shoulder this morning.  They had planned to inspect both the rotator cuff and bicep for any potential damage.  Well good thing that they did as the bicep was torn and needed to have some re-attachment.  I guess I will need to work on all my left-handed skills (which usually hover around 'near useless') as I will be in a sling for the next six weeks.

MRIs are highly advanced diagnostics, but it seems that reading them is still open to some subjectivity.  The three orthopedic doctors that I saw all had differing ideas of the problem, ranging from 'no damage', 'cervical compression', 'rotator cuff tear' to just 'bones spurs with a small chance of other damage worthy of the further inspection'.  I'm glad that I picked the right doctor!

Life is full of surprises (although I have thought over the past two years that there some real damage there).

I have been down this road before (broken hands), but I welcome any hints, tips or suggestions (I'm swapping my mouse buttons as soon as i finish this post).

Hi Gene, It sounds like you made a good choice with the doctor you picked and he’s going to get you properly fixed. It’ll be annoying for a while trying to get used to using your wrong hand but it’ll get…

    Hi Gene,

I hope you get better soon! Although I've not tried it, there could be speech assistant apps built-in to Windows/Mac that might partially help while you get left-mouse practice. Anyway I hope you recover quickly and in any event enjoy working less during the Xmas break!

    Hi Gene,

Sorry that you will be on modified duty for a while. How about those doctors and their medical technology. I am approaching my third year past my expiration date. Doc says that without modern medical technology I would have bought the farm.

In the meantime while you heal you can share any brilliant ideas with the rest of us and we will prototype them for you.

    John

    Hi Gene,

It sounds like you made a good choice with the doctor you picked and he’s going to get you properly fixed. It’ll be annoying for a while trying to get used to using your wrong hand but it’ll get easier and you’ll be back to using your right hand before you know it. On the plus side, six weeks of learning how to use your left hand will probably leave you with better functionality in that hand so you’ll find fiddly jobs hat need two hands easier in future!

Anyway, I hope everything heals well and your arm is back to 100% when it’s all over.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael
