Project Adverpising: A Wi-Fi Beacon with Raspberry Pi

Some of you might have gotten a little suspicious seeing that I had stocked up on Wi-Pis earlier. Well, you are right to be suspicious, as I was thinking of a little Wi-Fi-based project.

I came to the realization that a wireless network's SSID can serve a "beacon" and "advertising" opportunity. Coupled with some nefarious networking tricks on the Raspberry Pi, I can make a small device that I can carry with me to advertise my site to everyone that is nearby.

Um. Well, I've got about bursts of energy, each totalling roughly 0.1mJ from the point of emission, emitted with regularity at about 100ms intervals in approximately a 22Mhz bandwidth centred about 2.412Ghz that I'm willing to provide for free ...

... make what you will of that energy but I think that's pretty cool ... .

Funny tale about that when I worked for NZ Post/Telecom as a Radio Tech,

In those days when we had valve transmitters, the taxi channel used to go most of the time.
If you had brought a pie for lunch, there was just enough room to sit just above the final valve where it remained nicely warm until lunchtime ....

So that was free heating ...... until those damn transistor things came along ...they'll never catch on.

Is this like the way you can use the heat from the manifold of the engine to cook your dinner ?
Also did the pie have a "designer" hole in it to receive the valve ?

I believe they had all sorts of issues with that one ... including unwanted smells from the engine.

Also did the pie have a "designer" hole in it to receive the valve ?

No the final valve was enclosed in a perforated metal shield to prevent stray RF.
It was a convienient height for the pie to sit on top, and then slide the transmitter back in.

Absolute temperature control was achieved by sliding the transmitter out a little.
