Project: Generate High-Quality Industrial Fire/Alarm Sounder Audio with Python

This is a bit of a weird one, so I decided it's probably worth a cross-posting here on element14 simply because it started with me looking at a Connect Magazine at a Roshni LP sounder ...

image

... and asking myself ... what does its 32-tones sound like? What about the other sounders out there?

image

This led me down a weekend project chasing down sounder datasheets, coding with Python using rather simple math to generate nice and crispy tones. Being sick with the flu didn't stop me from appreciating these rather important sounds that we so rarely hear. Perhaps you'd like to start your morning with an evacuation tone as well ... whether that be a slow whoop or a sequence of alternating tones (depending on where you come from).

Full details including code over at my personal blog at https://goughlui.com/2024/01/29/project-generate-high-quality-industrial-fire-alarm-sounder-audio-with-python/

As usual, any comments are definitely appreciated ...

Great article Gough. Though some of the tones scared the dog.

Aircraft sounders might be worth exploring next ? I think they are all unique tones/patterns so as the source can be identified on the cockpit voice recorder. ( I've just spotted your blog on AFILS recordings…

It looks like Auracast is finally one step closer. Ampetronic & Listen Technologies are starting to launch their AURI solution. https://www.ampetronic.com/auri/ https://www.listentech.com/auri/

I should clarify, I use the invisible fence where the collar gives the dog a certain tone just before she gets zapped.

So she is very sensitive to any sound close to the collar warning.

It's an interesting potential - but then again, I think most of the flight simulator software does a fairly decent job of it. I haven't seen any datasheets with tone listings for those ...

As for AFILS - if only there was a way to get a better and cleaner signal ... *creates a coil the size of a T-shirt*.

Well, it didn't say "brown note" on the datasheet!

( I've just spotted your blog on AFILS recordings taken at railway stations. You'll be taking field strength and frequency response measurements next and seeing if they are compliant Slight smile )
