December has been a hard month, but still accomplished 1 project

18 Dec 2015

Its seems to be happening more and more, where these mass massacres are happening.

On Dec 5, 2008 I nearly lost my life in such a massacres.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westroads_Mall_shooting

Out of all the probability involved, I happened to be:

In the store during my lunch break

on the 3rd floor where the shooting occurred

And 2 minutes in before the shooting happened.

Fortunately I was on the direct opposite end but in his direct line of sight.

When the gunman entered, he took 2 shots at me across the store.  The sound of the bullets going through the clothes racks I will never forget.  I will contain the rest but my point is that December around this time is a touchy time for me.  Though through the years I have coped, the numerous shooting happening in Dec through the years seems to keep it fresh in my mind.

Unfortunately, some events happened this month (2015) that have caused me to break down a bit.  But in the end, all ended well!  Let me recap.

First, on Dec 2 my daughter and I were playing, and she hit her head on the window seal.  She likes to jump on me and she overshot one time.

5 Stiches have now scared her perfect complexion and I felt terrible, I kept sobbing and was so grateful yet worried it could have been far worse!

Then on the DAY of Dec 5, my cat became deadly ill.  This cat I have had for 15 years, nearly 40% of my current lifespan.  He was a major bonding factor for my wife and I and I give him credit for sealing the deal in the relationship.

5 years ago he became diabetic.  On Dec 5 he became ill, and I didn't think much of it.  By morning, I realized he could not hold down water.  We assumed his insulin was messed up and gave him some.  We nearly killed him between the insulin and not taking him to the vet.  We drove him to the emergency vet and $900 later he was stable for the night.  Had we have waited 1 more hour we would have lost him.

He was in a coma for 3 days requiring us to run an IV machine, turn him every 30 minutes, and check his blood sugar every 2 hours.  We had some close calls.  We were getting pressured to euthanize him, but my wife stayed strong.  We cared for him overnight and he stayed at the vet during the day.

His kidneys had shown failure, and he had a high infection.

We set check point, and on Thursday of last week I decided if his numbers were not better, he is suffering and we need to end it.  However, his numbers did get better.  The infection was gone but kindeys still critical.  He was running out of time on the IV.

We set another date of Saturday, and by the time we took him in he was walking and eating.  He pulled out his IV when he tried to make a run for it to the cat food.

Here we are 2 weeks in and he is doing great!  I was so distraught as I thought about how I have pictures with him with my kids as babies, and me 15 years younger.  I wasn't ready for him to go and I fell he was not ready either.

It amazing the amount if contradicting information there is in the animal medical world.  Its years if not decades behind human medical science.

In the end we don't know what happened, but being diabetic can complicate a simple illness.  My error was not to take him to the vet in time.  I got off the hook this time thank god.

I did complete 1 project, a raspberry Pi security cam.  It has now turned into a cat cam!  I am using it to watch him during the day to ensure he is ok.  My previous blog post will have the details!

Thanks for reading this blog.  Its tough for me to work projects with a hard time line I am realizing. I have a lot of life going on!

Here's to a better December for the rest of the month.  Now got to get that xmas tree up and gifts wrapped!

During events like this, you just hope for the best and carry on. Last year we had to put both of our dogs down about six months apart. It was tough, but you have to carry on. Take care of your family…

Take care of your family first, then you can justify time for other activities.

    Keep positive.
