Quick Project: Pi Security Cam

30 Nov 2015

Ill be using the Pi NOIR CameraPi NOIR Camera which is a Pi Cam without the IR filter.  In light conditions all the color is washed out, but it is able to see in the dark even without an IR source.

Ill also be using the Motion Tool to do the heavy work for me for recording, emailing, and detecting motion

Requirements:

  • Video only records when motion is detected.
  • Motion detection via video feed, not a PIR sensor.
  • Ability to see in low light conditions (not completely dark).
  • Ability to limit the video length per video (1 minute at a time).
  • Videos are emailed out immediately after being taken.
  • A "safe button" which is a button I can press to turn off motion detection, the motion will auto arm after 1 hour.
  • A process to mange video files, erasing them after 2 days.
  • *Nice to have: Video view from a web browser.
  • Portable, and easy to hide.  Will be disguised as a common object that would be in a room.

Hardware:

Raspberry Model B

Raspberry Pi Enclosure

Pi NOIR camera

Camera EnclosureCamera Enclosure

32 GB Class 10 SD Card

1A Power supply

WiPi wireless adapterWiPi wireless adapter

Software:

Motion Tool for recording, emailing and detecting motion

Python for video deleting scheduled with CROND

Black Coffee cup

I have a larger black coffee cup that should be able to enclose the entire setup.  Its porcelain so I can drill a hold for the camera to peer out of.  A coffee cup has a stable base and some weight to it.  It also will not look out of place in my house since I routinely leave cups laying around anyways.  I will also need a hole for the power supply wire to enter.

I will reply with my progress to this thread.  more to come with pictures!

I have completed this project, but not posted details yet for a good reason. I will update my blog and then come back here and update this blog. I ended up using a USB camera instead of the Pi Cam. Slower…

You might find that it is better, but the sensitivity isn't enhanced, so having an IR light source will help.

You can see a couple of examples in the pdf attached to this blog.
