The Idea of gun totting penguins comes to mind but this is the real thing a $17K rifle from a

company from Austin Tx called Trackingpoint

The aiming system actually makes the pressure required to pull the trigger change depending on the lock

so it's still possible to fire with out the computer but it's much harder so the human is still in charge of

firing but still it raises ethical questions!

    Good question , the human selects the target and ultimately pulls the trigger the technology is very much a shooter's aid. The questions I see here are as it becomes a fully automatic system.

    i also wonder about software contributors seeing the Linux OS and what ever OSS software been put into this and similar objects. So my point isn't with this weapon specifically but maybe where it could lead.

    Yeah, I think that is the danger with all technology. This is really a culmination of embedded technology as it stands today. Accelerometers, gyros, and various other sensors all tied together to aid a human to perform a task.

     

    I'm sure there are plenty of LAMP porn servers out there. And while the vanilla stuff may not be offensive to all, there is plenty of seriously creepy and illegal stuff out there as well. That is not a statement against the technology, nor should it be.

     

    Honestly, I think there are people who will buy it cause they have the money. They may hunt with it. They may use it for long distance shoooting. Seems like they'd get bored with it. Governments may buy it to arm snipers, but the ones they train today are probably damn near as good. They have tech, but not like this, and they trained to live without the tech in case it breaks.

     

    I'd like to shoot it once or twice, just to see it live, but honestly I think I would prefer my 1892 Winchesters with iron sights.

    It raises some questions sure, and I have no problem with guns, as its not the guns fault it is the user.

    Its a very interesting concept, and is not your average persons purchase, but I wonder what will happen when the Asian market starts copying it.

    They don't actually say how they get the wind information, which I'm interested in.

     

    I wonder what the boot time is .."hang on Mr shooter ...my guns booting" isn't going to work too well.

    Well put, the morality is still with those who use it. With regards to the rifle it's a very interesting technical marvel and at $17K not that many will be buying it new there will be a core of well healed hunters with them and a few that will find it far too expensive a tool to take out in to some real dirt. Again as you say the military may buy a few but this is a very high price item. Maybe this is the deluxe 1st model and they hope to bring out the more affordable one with most f the features and some of the bugs ironed out... We'll see how this goes !!

    I think you can fire at any time as long as you don't want the computer to help. Also they mention waiting several seconds whilst depressing "mode" buttons to set the targetting method so it could be a good few seconds for target assistance but I assume this is something you have already set up before setting up the position ..

     

    Any way are you rigging this baby to your "Santa Catcher" ...Give me the mountain bike or I put a "cap in your ***" Santa........devilish glee emoticon could of gone hereimage
