Parallella from Adapteva Arrives at last

21 May 2014

After been warned by a customs fee payment I knew this was coming at last  so I've been waiting quite excited for the last few days for my Parallella from Adapteva. This has literally just come through the door so I've not done anything with it as yet but I thought I'd post a few photos of  a real in the wild board.

No instructions or anything so I was a bit miffed until I saw the URL  on the front of the box! image

It comes with a heatsink and they recommend a Fan ....looks like hotstuff!

Access to the main guts from underneath and what looks like the microSD Card as well.

after a year of waiting I may be more excited by the Zynq processor than the Parallella but lets see how it goes!

I suspect you'll be getting more use out of the Zynq than the Epiphany, but either way will be interested to see what you do with it.

There really needs to be some 'killer app' for the Epiphany, without one does it stand out at all in what's becoming an increasingly crowded market?   Has the years wait been too long?

Well, the Parallella is still the cheapest Zynq board I know of.  It will be interesting to see what people do with Epiphany, if anything.  I wonder (but not enough to do the analysis) how it compares to the now-documented VideoCore IV in the RasPi SoC?

Needing the heat sink and fan on Zynq is a little disturbing.

I agree with you John, They supply the Heatsink and say the Fan is optional but when you go on the site it says it's not optional and  with out it the board may fail .... Other note there is no point provided for the Fan I'm non too happy with that.. Also the Download for the boot image is in two parts one the /boot which is the Kernel image and the other the OS which is around 1GB ... Just downloaded it and the Gzip wasn't valid so I don't know if they have a corrupt file or it was done in the Download. total PITA as the WGET command is normally reliable!

I think the Zynq is doing most of the Donkey work most of the time ..looks like they are even using it for video in which case that may be why it get's hot may well be wound up tight to get a good HDMI bitstream...Squeal Piggy
