Acronyms Initialisms Abbreviations and Variables

       A while back I started a list of abbreviations and acronyms that were being used in the questions and discussions on the E-14 web site. Since I often found myself not able to understand the context of the sentence until I googled the particular sequence of letters I felt that others might be having the same problem. My initial list was entered in the forum a couple months ago and has been viewed over 2000 times. I promised in the initial publication that I would update the list on the forum from time to time. Here is the updated list at this time. If anyone has suggestions for additional entries or if I have gotten any of the below listed wrong please let me know.                  

 

I have attached an Xcel .xlsx file for the list below in case you want to save it and make your own up dates.

I have attached the latest list of Electronic Initialisms and Acronyms for those who are interested. There are about 750 entries in the list at this time.

    Wow, That's a very comprehensive list! Thank you for putting all that together.

    ps, MOV is in there twice - yeah I don't know how my strangely wired brain picked that up in the quick glance I gave it! Had a little "rain-man" moment image

    Great catch! As I was integrating one list into another I must have typed twice or as my family calls them (Senior Moments). I will correct it on my list so future posts will have at least one less mistake.

    It's easy to miss one with so many items in the list.

     

    I had to do something similar a few years ago, merging several lists of similar data for an app I was building.

    I found it was very helpful to use some spreadsheet magic. I thought I'd try it now to your spreadsheet, and it actually just involved adding this formula in C1:

    =IF(A1=A2; "Check please"; ".")

     

    And then just drag copy it all the way down. There are some duplicate symbols with different meanings, so there's a bit of manual labour still involved, but very little.

    You could compare the descriptions in column B, but that would only find exact duplicates (missing minor wording or punctuation differences)

    (ps, I used OpenOffice, but the formulas tend to work across the board)

    Thanks for the nice fix. I will make the corrections tonight and implement the duplication scanner.
