Wire-Wrap Techniques - ii - the Tools

imageWell, Wire-Wrap® Tools are very simple and you will need the following: Wire-Wrap Gun, Bit and Sleeve for the gun, wire stripper( more later), Unwrapping tool. For heaven's sake please do not skimp on quality, and don't use off-brand tools.  Plus you will need a plethora of Wire-Wrap IC sockets gold plated preferred and pre-cut or bulk Kynar 20au silver plated wire.

First the Wire-Wrap Guns

image image image
1. Manual 2. Standard Gun 3. Gun with Anti-Backforce
  1.  Just don't use it. They are a pain in the rear to master.
  2.  This is the Standard Gun that works fine I just don't care for them.
  3.  This is the best of the bunch it has Anti-Backforce and makes the gun the easiest to use.

image Next is the Bit and Sleeve which is the part that sticks out of the gun. The sleeve does not rotate but the bit does. And it rotates around the Pin of the IC socket and in doing so wraps around the post creating the gas-tight joint.

Please whatever you don't use anything like the image on the left they are trash and you will never get a quality wrap. Image #4 is a No-Nik Stripper (preferred tool), I have other strippers as well but I can't seem to find them.  Image #5 is the  Bit and Sleeve, #6 is the Unwrapping tool

4. No-Nick Strippers 5. Bit and Sleeve 6. Unwrapping Tool  7. Wire

Image #7 is some pre-cut and stripped Kynar wire. You can get this in almost any length, and color. In fact, I still have a 5K foot spool of black.

Good to know.  I've never done wire-wrap.  I see examples at a manufacturing site in the "museum", the computers in the abandoned basement from the 1960s
