I thought I'd share with you this little alarm clock weather station I picked up as part of a shopping cart earlier this year:
I had wanted a little clock for the bedroom, because the one I had was rather hard to read, and the clock-radio-alarm thing was getting super old and we rarely used it anymore.
This little unit is kind of neat.
I like the colours, which makes it really easy to see the time, but also it shows me the day of the week (important for us retired folks ) and the date.
The "weather station" part shows me the indoor temperature and humidity (which is rather high still - it's been a very warm and humid fall), also both important bits of information for me.
I'm not sure about the forecast - I'm guessing it's a prettier version of a barometer, which guesses weather based on air pressure changes. The forecast says we can expect rain on Friday, so for it to predict it now is a little premature
Now here is the funny part - this clock can run on batteries or on USB power. However, when running on batteries the display only shows for a few seconds when you press a button, and when running on USB power the display is always on and cannot be dimmed - it's not toooo bright, being on the other side of the bedroom, but still a bit too bright to be ideal.
So the way I got around this is to install batteries AND plug it into a USB charger. The USB charger was then plugged into a smart outlet.
The USB power stays on all day and shuts off automatically late at night around our usual bed time so that the display stays off overnight.
We set it up so that the smart outlet turns on the USB charger an hour or so before we normally get up - this gives us a little bit of wake-light too.
Go figure - that little display-dimming quirkiness turned out to be a really perfect smart-home feature!
