As I had feared, I did not get a lot of opportunity to work on my project for Mother's Day and my wife's birthday. I did manage to build something basic that I could show my wife.
I printed a modular segment to hold a PIR sensor and a USB power bank. This segment is attached to the back of the FunHouse facade that I had printed earlier Adafruit FunHouse . This allows the FunHouse to be portable, but it isn't aesthetically pleasing. In the future, I'll design a LiPo battery module that can be more transparently integrated.
Then I created Happy Birthday and Happy Mother's Day displays. These are pretty basic as I'm still figuring out the available CircuitPython libraries. I'm also not thrilled with the color rendering on the display.
I had hoped to use the PIR sensor to trigger music or images, but I didn't have time to work that out. I'm having problems finding the appropriate compiled libraries (.mpy) for CircuitPython v6, so will probably need to figure out how to compile the ones I need (e.g. adafruit_slideshow).
I ended up with a simple display that rotates the NeoPixel colors and swaps the Happy Birthday and Happy Mother's Day messages.
