Backyard Beekeeping: Native Bees

6 Apr 2023

I enrolled in a community college course about backyard honey bee hives - Backyard Beekeeping: Back to School.  That course is in May after the Save the Bees Challenge has completed.  My wife pointed out to me that our local Parks and Rec has a workshop on native bees this month.

I decided that I'd check this out since it could give me some ideas as to how to use The Finisher's prize in the challenge.  It would be interesting to see if I could successfully start from wild bees rather than buying cocoons.

If you had access to a CNC mill, I suspect you could get quite creative by using a variety of drill bit sizes and spacings to create various dithering patterns. You could also sculpt the front of it rather than leaving it flat. Not sure that the visiting bees would take much notice of your artistic efforts however.

I've seen a few quite elaborate designs on-line, some using a variety of different materials to create different sized and shaped cavities.

That’s a great video.  Hope I can make one like that soon…

I had a few wild bees keeping me company in the front garden this morning, whilst I was out planting their new improved summer menu...
