I bought a 7" Amazon Kindle Fire HDX when it first came out in November 2013. It's claim to fame was its high resolution 1920x1200 color display. I've been using it pretty much daily since then for an hour or two for videos and puzzles. Recently I've noticed the back of the case bulging and this morning I saw that the screen had started to separate from the case.
The unit itself is still working, but I think the mechanical stress will probably damage it soon. I'm going to stop using it until I figure out whether I want to try installing a new battery. I saw a video on YouTube that made the battery replacement look super simple, but I realized that it was for an HD unit not an HDX. The HDX disassembly is quite a bit more complex.
All the replacement batteries that I've seen are made in China, I haven't figured out a good source.
Here's one from Walmart for $18.59 (ships from California)
And one from batteryship.com in Wyoming for $35.60. This one has positive reviews and also comes with tools. Looks like the same battery that is sold on Amazon.
Or I can buy one from Amazon for under $30 (Chinese brands, no tools, not Prime).
I guess I shouldn't complain as the tablet has worked well for 9 years. I will probably try to fix it as I like the high resolution display which isn't available anymore. The current resolution on the 7" and 8" Fire HD tablets is 1280x800.
I'll try to document the repair when I get around to doing it.
